Get Ready for a Whole New Look at Balenciaga

by Amy Sciarretto

No need to binge watch Star Trek or any other space-exploring shows, both old and new, this weekend. All you need to do to be transported to another world, planet, or to space is look at the new Balenciaga ads. The Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2015 ads are futuristic and stark, but that's not really a new plot device in fashion or fashion forward-ness. The images certainly spotlight the cool and sleek lines of the clothes with a minimal, out of this world setting. There's also lots of mesh and netting, which feels fresh for the brand, since I always think of the stiff and shaped poufs that Jennifer Connelly wore in previous seasons.

But the shocker of all shockers is the bags. They are way more structured and squared off than what I'm used to when it comes to Balenciaga, namely the "It" and iconic motorcycle bags, which are slouchy and loose and hung off the arms of Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan when they were dictators of street style.

That said, every fashion house goes through ch-ch-changes and hires new creative directors, and it takes time for things to shift. While I didn't look at these images and instantly think "Balenciaga!" due to conditioning from previous years, I was, in fact, intrigued. The netting of the clothes adds such mystique, no?

Before we hit the S/S 2015 campaign, here's the Connelly outfit I mentioned.

And now, for the ads.

This is my favorite, even with its school marmishness. I'd wear this to work, a power lunch, a meeting, or a funeral.

This is quite an unexpected shape and style for a Balenciaga bag.

Now that's a coat! I can't help but wonder what's underneath!

The bottom outfit looks like Rihanna was the main source of inspo.

See what I mean about the peekaboo netting? It gives off just a hint of skin. It's so sexy without any vulgarity or "too much" being shown.

The top half of the outfit to the right is everything.

Those pockets, though. The collection keeps getting better.

Soak them all in. Stunning right? It's also very Alexander Wang-informed, for obvious reasons.

And that's my slouchy black Balenciaga bag. It's one of my all-time faves.
