'American Hustle' Is All About the Hair

by Alicia Lutes

There's a lot of good stuff going on in American Hustler's first official, full-length trailer, from director David O'Russell. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are back on screen together, Christian Bale and Amy Adams seem like a perfectly conniving lovebird duo, and Jeremy Renner (just for good luck). All very, very good things about an interesting story where people do some very not good things.

But the biggest takeaway from the trailer? This movie is all about hair. Hair, hair, hair! Hello 1976! You are here and we are A-OK with that. There's big hair! Small hair. Straight hair, curly hair. Back-combed hair, combed-over hair. Tiny curlers filled with big dreams. Curled, crimped, clipped, and dipped — this movie has everything that's follicle-ly fabulous about the disco fever generation nation.

I mean, it also has a lot of other stuff going on, too. The film is a fictionalized take on the FBI Abscam scandal of the late '70s and early '80s. An investigation so intense that it involved to the conviction of a United States senator, six members of the House of Representatives, one member of the New Jersey State Senate, members of the Philadelphia City Council, and an inspector for the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

But still: HAIR, you guys! Amirite?

American Hustle opens Dec. 13, 2013 in New York and Los Angeles, with a wide release slated for Dec. 25, 2013.
