Shooting By Austin Peay State Leaves 5 Injured

Five people were shot Monday night near downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, just several blocks from Austin Peay State University. Local NBC affiliate WSMV reports that the shooting near the university occurred around 9 p.m. local time near the intersection of 9th Street and Carpenter Street. Details on whether the shooting was related to the Austin Peay campus were not immediately available.

ABC affiliate WKRN said four of the five victims sustained serious injuries. Two victims were transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to Clarksville Police. Two other victims were taken to Gateway Medical Center by ambulance. The status of the fifth victim is unknown. None of the five victims have been identified.

On Facebook, Austin Peay campus police alerted students about the nearby shooting. The post read that Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services used the university's sports field to land its helicopters for the hospital transports. Campus police also told students to take precautions.

Although there does not appear to be a danger to the university community, please take precautions to ensure your safety.

The investigation is ongoing. As of early Tuesday morning, a suspect has not been located. Authorities are asking the public to call Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 931-645-8477 for any information related to the shooting.
