Your Next 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' Book is Coming

by Caitlin White

Every kid (and adult for that matter) just made an addition to their early Christmas list. Jeff Kinney's uber popular series is getting its next installment: The new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book 10, yes 10, is set to release by Amulet this November 3. Every single of Kinney's books in the series, one through nine, has hit No. 1 on USA Today's Best-Selling Books List and all have spent significant time on the New York Times bestseller list, and if that's any indication, book 10 is going to be massive.

Kinney released a statement about the next Wimpy Kid book:

The tenth Wimpy Kid book gives me a chance to reset the series. I've thought a lot about what's made these books work and how it all got started. So for me, personally, it's back to basics. I'm carrying that theme through the book.

According to USA Today, the new book will take place on a field trip to a farm, where the generational gap between the adult chaperones and children becomes clear and, obviously, leads to hilarity.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise follows our hero Greg Heffley who struggles to fit in both with his family and with his middle school. (Seriously, middle school is tough.) But Greg has a great imagination and he works hard, and creatively, to become one of the gang, more often than not causing more trouble than help.

The book was originally conceived as a story for adults, aimed to mimic the effect of the TV show The Wonder Years, whose readers could look back at middle school years and empathize with Greg through the shaky middle school years. Which is probably why literally everyone and anyone can read and enjoy Kinney's series.

In 2010, Diary of a Wimpy Kid was made into a movie starring Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Zachary Gordon as the titular character. It was followed by two sequels, 2011's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules matching book two and 2012's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days matching book four. And, um, we're waiting for more.
