8 Kendrick Lamar Lyrics As Poetic As His Sweet Engagement Announcement
Congratulations to Kendrick Lamar, who this morning confirmed his engagement to his longtime girlfriend Whitney Alford, with an announcement that was almost just as poetic as, like, every set of Kendrick Lamar lyrics you've ever heard. According to reports, Lamar and Alford were high school sweethearts, and they've been together ever since, about ten years. Pretty adorable.
Lamar has often spoken about how much he appreciates Alford's unwavering support, saying in a Billboard interview earlier this year:
She's been here since day one. I wouldn't even call her my girl. That's my best friend. I don't even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion—she's somebody I can tell my fears to.
Oh man, so great. But, just when I thought I couldn't love these two any more, I heard the very simple statement that Lamar used to confirm that he and Alford are to be married, and it was all over. During an on-air interview with the radio show Power 105.1, Lamar acknowledged the rumors of his engagement, saying, "Yeah definitely. I'm loyal to the soil."
Eep! Wouldn't have guessed that seven words could warm my heart that much... which is strange, actually, when you consider all the times Lamar has used some romantic language in his music. The evidence that he was a softie at heart was right in front of us the whole time, and here's the proof, via a few Kendrick Lamar lyric excerpts that are just as poetic as his engagement announcement.
I love the way you, put it on your eyesThe roses on your face, light up the skyThose lips are colorful all of the time
Do you believe in me? Are you deceiving me?Could I let you down easily, is your heart where it need to be?Is your smile on permanent? Is your vow on lifetime?Would you know where the sermon is if I died in this next line?
Platinum on everything, platinum on wedding ringMarried to the game, made a bad bitch yours
Lovin' you, lovin' you, not lovin' you, one hundred proofI can feel you vibin', recognize that you're ashamed of meYes I hate you too
Sit still and close your eyes (smoke to it)What's behind the other door? Oh-ohhNo more silence (no more silence)Don't kill this thing we got called love (don't shoot)Just searching for the perfect shot
We hurt people that love us, love people that hurt usHurt people that love us, love people that hurt usHurt people that love us, love people that hurt us
I promise that I know you very wellYour eyes never lie even if they tellSweet lullabies that come with a smellOf a dozen roses flippin' down the green hill
I will, I will, climb the highest mountainBefore the flood comesAnd all my fight is drowning in bloodWhat I gotta lose? What I gotta prove?I guess, war is my love
Congratulations to the happy couple, and to the rest of us who get to experience Lamar's love from afar through his music!
