After its debut as the first-ever plus-size brand at London Fashion Week — one that left fashion critics and bloggers applauding with dropped jaws — we're now able to have a little chunk of the runway for ourselves. As of last week, we can now purchase Evans Design Collective pieces. The collection was hailed for its ingenuity, boldness, and its on-trend fashions. But the Design Collective line from the British plus-size retailer also brought together designers Clements Ribeiro, Giles Deacon, Hema Kaul, Jamie Wei Huang, Lulu Liu and Vita Gottlieb to create a standout, high-fashion concept line, and it ended up being something spectacular — and something spectacularly needed.
Instead of trying to hide plus-size women's curves or attempting to create a "flattering" hourglass shape, the cuts are purely of-the-moment and play with draping and proportion in a way that isn't giving fat babes a watered-down version of "fashion lite." The Design Collective collection uses vibrant shades, shimmery fabrics, and fresh cuts to bring top trends to plus-size women.
While plus-size fashion has improved immeasurably in the last 10 years, there's still a barrier between what's considered artistic high fashion and actually having a variety of clothes in body-positive styles to choose from. As Chastity Garner of plus-size blog GarnerStyle said on Twitter Saturday night, "In plus fashion we gotta work on the evolution of our artistic point of view... see more than the bodycon & crop tops... there is so much more." This collection definitely helps to add a few bricks towards bridging that gap and giving fat babes what they want and what they deserve: The same damn things as their straight-size counterparts. So embrace your inner street style muse and get ready to shop the collection. Pieces will be added on an ongoing basis this spring, but grab some of my favorite items, available right now, before they're gone:
