John Legend & Miguel Are Making A Movie

by Alexis Rhiannon

It was announced on Monday that John Legend is going to produce a movie starring Miguel, and I don't know if I've ever been more excited for a film soundtrack in my whole life. The project doesn't even have a name yet — although we do know it's a drama — and Miguel is still only really in talks to star — and doesn't have the part nailed down yet — so the finished product is months if not years away. And yet I still found myself clicking my way over to iTunes to search for "Miguel and John Legend," just in case. Better safe than sorry, y'know?

The story apparently revolves around a has-been musician with a single hit song, who only gets jazzed on the music world again when he gets a job prepping a woman for her upcoming audition on a singing competition show. The Wrap is describing it as a "musical romantic drama," which presumably means that our young hero Miguel falls helplessly in love with his student as they sing their way through a relationship scored by music curated by Legend. It will be written by Taylor Cohen and will serve as the directorial debut of Nabil Elderkin, who has previously worked on commercials and other video projects. Here's Legend's statement making the announcement:

Mike, Ty and I are really excited about producing our long time friend and collaborator Nabil Elderkin’s directorial debut. He’s a major talent and being able to cast Miguel in the male lead puts us in the position to really build an incredible film with strong musical elements. We look forward to working with this dream team we’ve assembled to deliver something special.

Production is set to begin this fall, and I'll just be feverishly searching iTunes and Spotify for this music until then. There's a place for this soundtrack on my iPod right next to the soundtrack for Season 1 of Empire, if I can wait that long.
