Who Is Robert Downey Jr.'s Wife?

by Jaclyn Anglis

Fans of Robert Downey Jr. are sure to be pleased at the MTV Movie Awards, airing the night of Sunday, April 12. After all, the actor has already been announced as this year's winner of the MTV Generation Award, a major win that recognizes an actor who has engaged the MTV audience throughout his or her career. Downey Jr.'s costars from the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron will be the ones presenting the award to him, so he's sure to receive a lot of love that night, both from the audience and from his costars. Speaking of love, some fans and audience members might be curious to know more about the actor's love life, specifically about Robert Downey Jr.'s wife, Susan Downey.

Downey Jr. and his wife have been married since August 2005 and share one child together, the third child for Downey Jr. So that's nearly 10 years of marriage! They obviously have a very strong bond, and Downey Jr. speaks very highly of the special lady in his life. In July 2014, Downey Jr. announced his wife's pregnancy on Facebook as such: "I don't know if it's a 'man's world,' but I'm certain women run it. Susan and I are therefore delighted to announce we are expecting a baby. Girl."

Of course, running the world means doing more than just having a child. Susan Downey is a film producer, a marathon runner, and holds the unofficial Hollywood title of Miracle That Saved Robert Downey Jr.

Born Susan Levin in the suburbs of Chicago, she told Harper's Bazaar that she knew from age 12 that she wanted to be in the movie business. After graduating from her high school class as valedictorian, she definitely followed her dreams, pursuing a degree in filmmaking from the University of Southern California. In 1999, she became the vice president of Silver Pictures, where she worked on countless films. And in 2009, she stepped down from the company to create her own production company with her husband, which scored them a first-look deal in Hollywood.

The exercise enthusiast with a relatively clean-cut history downplayed her "Miracle That Saved Robert Downey Jr." title in her Harper's interview, likely a nod to Downey Jr.'s lengthy history of drug problems and his now sobriety. Apparently, she laid down the gauntlet that if they were to be married, he had to give up drugs completely. And Downey Jr. is not shy about praising her for her great influence. He told Harper's in the same article, "I guess the only way to explain it is that I've become more like her. I'm still trying to figure out what happened. Whatever I was hungry for when I met Susan, I couldn't have known how much more satisfying what I got would be." Aww!

It is safe to say that we can probably count on seeing her make an appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, then. Keep your eyes peeled for the cute couple on the red carpet!
