Darren Criss Debuts Fab 'Hedwig' Makeup Look

by Marc Cuenco

Goodbye Lima... Hello, Broadway! Taking on his first post-Glee role, the newest Hedwig and the Angry Inch star Darren Criss tweeted his photo in full Hedwig makeup. The image from the promotional poster is the first time that fans will see the actor in character as the titular East German singer who underwent a botched gender reassignment surgery.

"I put on some makeup," Criss tweeted along with the photo. His androgynous and glam Hedwig look is a complete departure from the preppy, bow tie-wearing Blaine Anderson, which he played for five years on Fox's Glee. To get into character, the 28-year-old wore blue glitter eyeshadow, bright red lipstick, and pink blush.

Criss is the fourth actor to play Hedwig on Broadway since it debuted in April 2014, following in the footsteps of fellow mainstream celebs Neil Patrick Harris (who won a Tony Award for the role), Andrew Rannells, and Michael C. Hall. Criss will take over from the original Hedwig and co-creator John Cameron Mitchell, who's currently reprising his film role on stage. Just a few days before debuting his Hedwig photo on Twitter, Criss was criticized by fans for inappropriately calling his transgender character "this crazy woman-thing." Le sigh.
