There's More Family Drama Ahead on 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'

by Alice Walker

I really hope Skye enjoyed her nice little family dinner, because it sounds like the parental drama that's followed on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. since Skye was reunited with her father months ago isn't going anywhere. If anything, it's all going to get so much worse. From the moment we learned that Skye's mom is alive, it's been clear she had some sort of plan for the people she shepherds through the Inhuman transformation. Hopefully, it's a super nice plan that everyone gets on board with quickly, but I'm getting a little worried. Jiaying has been wonderful and kind — the mother Skye's been looking for her whole life. Their relationship has been so lovely that I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop because let's face it: this is S.H.I.E.L.D. we're talking about. We just can't have that much happiness for long. So I'm bracing myself for her plans to have more of a dastardly twist, and based on Entertainment Weekly's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spoilers, Skye's family and S.H.I.E.L.D. may come to blows. Jiaying's plans will be revealed and cause conflict soon, possibly putting Skye directly in the middle of her new-found biological family and adopted S.H.I.E.L.D. family. Here's what executive producer Jeffrey Bell revealed to EW.

Jiaying wants to protect her family and the Inhumans under her care—that’s her priority and she hasn’t lied to Skye about anything. But it’s also clear she has a larger plan for her people and that’s something we’ll reveal very soon. That’s a constant theme running through the season with all [of Skye’s] parental figures. Coulson is trying to make the world safer, but he’s a bit colder this season and more willing to make the tough decisions, which everyone doesn’t always like, as evidenced by the "real" S.H.I.E.L.D.

On the surface, that doesn't sound so bad! No lying, trying to protect everyone — no worries! Except that whole "trying to make the world safer" bit. That seems to be where everyone runs into trouble. It sounds like there are many conflicting opinions about what the right thing is, and my guess is that S.H.I.E.L.D. won't agree with anything Jiaying is trying to do to protect the Inhumans. Here's what else Bell told Entertainment Weekly.

It sounds simple, but doing the "right thing" is rarely a cut and dry matter with one, unassailable execution—so some will see Jiaying’s methodology as "good," some will see it as “bad," but everyone is going to understand there’s a good reason for her perspective on the world.

If S.H.I.E.L.D. and Jiaying end up going against one another, that's going to put Skye in a seriously tough place. I mean, we all know that Coulson and May are basically her adopted mom and dad, so you've got to wonder: who does Skye stay loyal to? Will she side with her biological family who are helping her understand her gifts? Or does she stick with the organization that took her in and gave her a home — but is not handling her new abilities very gracefully? My money's on Coulson. I know we've been seeing a colder side to him lately, but he loves Skye and is Director for a reason, he can figure some way to keep everyone happy (or just alive. I'd be happy with everyone staying alive).

No matter what her plan is for the Inhumans or how S.H.I.E.L.D. handles it, I hope Jiaying sticks around. Even if she is in constant conflict with Coulson and May, someone has to teach Skye how to not explode things when she gets stressed out. Perhaps she could even come to the Bus, at least for a little while. As much as I love the beautiful shots of their tucked away gifted-retreat-spa, I'm also ready for Skye to return to the team. They need all the help they can get right now.
