New 'Macbeth' Stills Provide Hints About the Film

by Kenya Foy

In what appears to be a case of perfect timing — five days after what would've been Shakespeare's 451st birthday, that is — three new photos from the Macbeth film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard have been released. While anyone who's familiar with the timeless tale knows all too well how this story ends (spoiler alert... not well), the photos offer a hint of what to expect from the upcoming Justin Kurzel-directed film, which will obviously be more imaginative than a simple retelling of the original version. As described by Empire, the upcoming Macbeth film is "a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn medieval Scotland."

The photos don't necessarily depict any action-packed moments (nor are they as dark and haunting as Macbeth's first film poster) — but fear not, Shakespeare aficionados! The movie stills reveal Fassbender and Cotillard in all of their medieval glory, and they’re intense and compelling enough to get the adrenaline pumping.

Currently, Macbeth doesn't have a U.S. release date — so, until it's bestowed one, let's dig a little deeper into what these photos may reveal about the film:

Macbeth Isn't Exactly The Flashiest King

Erm, perhaps he saves all his fancy robes for the war.

Cotillard's Portrayal of Lady Macbeth's Descent Into Insanity Is On Point

Her glassy-eyed stare is absolutely chilling.

The Chemistry Between Fassbender and Cotillard Is Palpable

Is this scene before or after their hands get bloody?

As intriguing as these photos are, they might leave Macbeth fans with more questions than answers... which will make the wait for the film's release that much more difficult. Where is that US release date already?!
