9 Worst Dressed Celebrities At The 2015 Met Gala Weren't Awful But They Did Miss The Mark

Part of what makes the Met Gala the Met Gala is the strictly-adhered to theme, which changes annually depending on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute's exhibit. But the celebrities aren't exactly known for following the theme closely, and this year's theme "China: Through The Looking Glass" was something of a land mine. No celebrity wants to be called out for racism on the red carpet, so most celebrities played it pretty safe and didn't take many risks within the theme.

That aversion to risk, however, led some stars to just completely miss the boat when it came to dressing to the theme. And others tried to take a risk, only to have it not really work out. Here are nine stars who, despite their best efforts, didn't manage to really fit the theme.

Grace Coddington

Don’t get me wrong. Grace Coddington is an amazing editor, and these pajamas look super comfortable. But these silk pajamas are too reminiscent of a Mao suit for me to get on board with the look.

Anne Hathaway

The hood on this gold dress makes it look more like a costume from Star Wars than a Chinese-inspired gown, let alone an outfit that’s appropriate for a black tie gala.

Georgia May Jagger

Although the vast majority of participants did a great job at drawing inspiration from Chinese culture, rather than from other East Asian cultures, Jagger’s dress is the closest one I saw to a geisha’s kimono.

Karolina Kurkova

Between the bell sleeves and the short hemline, Kurkova looks like she’s wearing a Halloween costume rather than a dress fit for a black tie event.

Dakota Johnson

Johnson looks like a disco ball, and I don’t know how that’s inspired by Chinese culture. The short length also makes it seem too casual. That dress would be perfect at the MTV Movie Awards, not the Met Gala.

Chloë Sevigny

I don’t really know what’s going on with this JW Anderson gown on Sevigny, and I’m not sure if I love it or hate it or if I’m offended by it. The embroidery is gorgeous and intricate, but there’s something about the look as a whole that seems a little off.

Cara Delevingne

It’s no secret that Delevingne likes tattoos, but painting cherry blossoms onto her skin seems like a lazy way to make the black jumpsuit she’s wearing seem “Chinese.”

Katy Perry

It’s unclear how Perry’s bold Moschino spray-painted gown and matching accessories fit into the Gala’s theme, even if it’s a cohesive and risky look.

Jenna Lyons

Just because Vogue hosted a pajama-themed party on Saturday night in honor of the Met Gala, that doesn’t mean it’s OK to show up on the red carpet in a pair of PJs, even if they’re J. Crew. Although, again, the attempt at comfort is noted and appreciated.
