Iced Coffee That Tastes Like Beer?

by Michelle Regalado

Have you ever had to make the tough choice between coffee and beer? I’ve personally found myself in that situation more times than I’d like to admit. The decision just got a whole lot easier though, thanks to Nitro coffee, a new kind of iced coffee that tastes like a cold beer.

Nitro coffee is an ice-cold beverage that’s served on tap like a brew, but gives you the caffeine fix you’re jonesing for. So how exactly does that work? Basically, the coffee is treated with nitrogen and carbon dioxide under lots of pressure, and then chilled in a keg. The treatment gives the drink a rich and creamy texture and a frothy top, like the kind you find on a Guinness.

Of course, the real question is how does it taste? Bon Appetit describes the flavor as “chocolatey” and “silky smooth,” which makes it a great drink for summer. But some have apparently also found the coffee to be too strong — as in, back-to-back shots of espresso kind of strong.

As someone who loves both coffee and beer, I honestly can’t decide how I feel about this. On the one hand, it looks surprisingly delicious. On the other, doesn’t combining so many elements of both drinks kind of kill the individual flavors? I always love the first sip of coffee in the morning and the first sip of beer at happy hour, but I'm not sure it would be quite as satisfying mixed together. Still, I’d be willing to give Nitro coffee a shot — all in the name of journalistic research, of course.
