Skye Might Turn Against Inhumans On 'S.H.I.E.L.D'

by Alice Walker

How are we doing out there? Everyone in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fandom feeling OK? Recovered enough from Jiaying’s bold power play in last weeks episode? I’ll admit, I was shocked when she went through with it and surprised by her methods, even though logically I know I shouldn’t be. When Skye’s parents were mentioned in Season 1 they were called “monsters” — and the refrain we constantly hear is that wherever Skye goes, death follows. Her parents were never set-up as the great hope she had been searching for. While some part of me always knew that Jiaying wasn't the wonder-parent we saw in Afterlife, the bigger part of me never really believed she would murder Gonzalez and intentionally start an all-out war, until after it was done. But once I recovered from the shock, I realized something. Jiaying's actions may send Skye back to S.H.I.E.L.D. to fight against the Inhumans, even though she is one of them.

I am pretty sure that the war with the Inhumans will play out for a lot longer than just the super-sized season finale and now that we know Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is renewed for Season 3, we can all collectively sigh in relief. But we should also brace ourselves for the fight to come — a fight that will directly test who Skye is loyal to, her S.H.I.E.L.D. teammates or her new family and powered friends. Right now, it’s looking like Skye will fight squarely on the side of the Inhumans. She’s referred to them numerous times as “us” and the finale preview shows her (literally) blowing May away. I think that’s all about to flip on its head though, and once Skye finds out what Jiaying’s plans really are, she will abandon her parents and fight with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Yes, Skye just had the best talk she’s ever had with Cal (who has been remarkably well behaved for a long time — too long, I’d say) and actually feels bad that he’s being carted off to SHIELD-jail. She and her mom have been nothing but sunshine and acceptance, the exact opposite of what she faced when her fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents found out about her powers. So it makes sense that everyone assumes Skye will side with the Inhumans, but I just don’t see it going down that way.

Here’s the thing: Skye has always been really fair. I think eventually she will find out that Jiaying started this war on purpose, and she will never be able to get over that. Remember, that was originally supposed to be Coulson sitting across from Jiaying — she easily could have killed him instead. Once Skye discovers that this war, which may cause even more death, was intentional, she will leave the Inhumans and go back to being a S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent.

Though this would make things harder on Cal and Jiaying, I don’t think it would stop them. If anything, it will just raise the stakes even higher as this war continues into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3.
