Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara Totes Match, Kinda

by Arielle Dachille

Way to subtly coordinate, you guys! At the Cannes Film Festival premiere of the new Todd Haynes-directed drama Carol , Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara wore black and white dresses of varying degrees of sheerness. Predictably, they both looked badass, too cool for school, and also sorta like opposite-day twins.

In case you haven't read up on their new movie, Carol follows a disenchanted housewife in the 1950s, played by Blanchett, who falls in love with a young woman working at a department store, played by Mara. Far be it from me to overanalyze color schemes, but perhaps the whole white/ black thing is an allusion to the purity of Mara's character, and the world-weariness of Blanchett's character. Eh? Anybody? Or perhaps they were just hanging out beforehand and came to the consensus that they should match. At the same time, they also wanted not to match. They opted for the inverse colors to their respective heads of hair, but simultaneously matched the hair of the other person. This gave them the look of a very fashionable checkerboard.

In any event, they both looked like extremely cool girls whose friendship you sorely desire, but are not sure you could ever attain. Also, Cate Blanchett could teach a class in draping a jacket coolly over one's shoulders. Just saying.
