2013 CMA Awards Best and Worst Dressed Stars

What's black, white, and sparkly all over? Last night's CMA Awards red carpet. All of country music's most beloved celebrities stepped out in Nashville, Tenn. and had a celebration full of musical performances, country pride, and lame jokes about Obamacare. And of course, lots of pretty dresses.

While the phrase "country music fashion" usually conjures up images of ridiculous, over-the-top outfits à la Dolly Parton, all the stars seemed to keep it (relatively) toned down this year. The red carpet was flooded with white and black dresses that were, naturally, still covered in beads and sparkles. Hair and makeup also seemed simpler than usual, with mostly natural faces and loose curls. There were strong looks from Connie Britton and Jana Kramer, but no complete disasters.

Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert were notably the only two stars wearing bright colors. Lambert opted for a sexy low-cut dress that was a gorgeous shade of blue. Taylor Swift went with red, and looked almost exactly like a Christmas Barbie.

There were an unfortunate number of cowboy hats, as is expected at such an event. But we'll focus on the positive here and take a look at some the better looks of the night.

Carrie Underwood

This Ralph & Russo Couture dress is about as "Carrie Underwood" as a dress can get. Not a fan of the matching eye shadow.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale looked pretty in Julien Macdonald.

Jennifer Nettles

This Naeem Khan dress made Jennifer Nettles' boob look fantastic, but I can't stop looking at her gorgeous wavy up-do.

Colbie Caillat

A very geometric Nicole Miller dress.

Kimberly Perry

An overly beaded dress from Johanna Johnson. I don't really like a single part of this look.

Kacey Musgraves

Blumarine dress and a little too much inner eye shadow.

Faith Hill

The belt and collar on this dress don't match! I don't get it.

Danielle Bradbery

Danielle Bradbery ventures out of all-white territory by adding a little black with BCBG Max Azria.

Kellie Pickler

Kellie Pickler's Georges Chakra Fall 2013 Couture dress is interesting, but she's experiencing a serious makeup FAIL.

Connie Britton

Britton looks gorgeous in Georges Hobeika’s Spring 2013.

Sheryl Crow

Look at Sheryl Crow, gettin' all vampy!

Like literally, she looks like a vampire with that slicked back hair.

Robin Roberts

Those shoes look perfect with Roberts' jumpsuit.

Aubrey Peeples

Audrey Peeples is the star of that classic film Sharknado.

Jana Kramer

Jana Kramer seems to be the only person at the CMAs who knew it was autumn. Her Theia Fall 2013 dress is lovely, and her makeup flawless.

Laura Alaina

This is how not to do blue.

Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Miranda Lambert

This is how to do blue: in Roberto Cavalli, obviously.

Taylor Swift

While I love this Elie Saab Couture dress, I can't help but wonder if I'll ever see Taylor Swift without eyeliner...

Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

And, well...

Duh.
