Gap Celebrated Delhi Opening With Cool Celebs

by Christie Drozdowski

On May 28, Gap in India finally became a reality when the American clothes and accessories giant inaugurated its first store in the city of Delhi. Kangana Ranaut, a popular and fan-favorite Bollywood actress, was on hand to promote the new store's opening and participate in the ribbon-cutting for the flagship brand's new location.

The actress was clothed in a casual Gap t-shirt, a denim over-shirt, and jeans, capitalizing on the appeal of Gap's traditionally modern and cool interpretation of "basic American clothing" fit for all occasions.

Over 1000 people waited in line to catch a glimpse of Ranaut and to participate in the store's first sales. The 10,000-square-foot shop is currently stocked with the 2015 summer collection for the women's and men's department, GapKids, and babyGap.

Oliver Kaye, CEO of Gap Business, said of the international brand's styles:

"I think our clothes are perfect for Indian summer. It's very easy to wear with a whole lot of linen feel to it."

Although this is the first store in the country, some of Gap's core spokespeople have long since had familiarity with the market, which also hosts plenty of other American clothing franchises. The brand's spokesperson at the inaugural event even made mention of how Shah Rukh Khan, another Bollywood superstar, made the brand popular in the 1998 Bollywood film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

If the star's retro Gap look resonates with the scores of people who'd like to get their hands on their own Gap sweatshirt, then it would seem Gap will have no problem being incorporated into the market in India.

And it would also appear that the beloved actress who made an appearance at the store's opening yesterday definitely sold the casual, chic American style made iconic by Gap since the brand's founding in 1969.
