10 of 'Vanity Fair's Most Iconic Covers

by Rosie Narasaki

Caitlyn Jenner was just introduced to the world in about the raddest, most badass way possible: Through what might just be the most striking and memorable Vanity Fair cover ever. All we have so far is the cover itself, along with a behind-the scenes video (the full story is set to come out with Vanity Fair's July issue, which will hit stands on June 9th), but it's more than enough — and I'm sure the July 2015 edition of the magazine is going to fly off the shelves (and into museums).

The accompanying behind-the-scenes video depicts Caitlyn intermittently chatting and laughing with famed photographer Annie Leibovitz and literally getting ready for her close-up — all as she sheds her old identity of Bruce, and introduces us to Caitlyn for the very first time (as the cover succinctly declares via subheading, "Call me Caitlyn"). She outlines her thought process behind the upcoming feature and cover, and explains the reasoning behind it — as she puts it, "The last few days of doing this shoot was about my life, and who I am as a person," and she then goes on to explain just what the moment will mean to her:

Bruce always had to tell a lie. He was always living that lie. Every day, he always had a secret, from morning until night. Caitlyn doesn't have any secrets. As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I'm free.

Any way you cut it, it's a landmark moment, both for Caitlyn and Vanity Fair — so to celebrate, let's take a look at 10 of the most memorable Vanity Fair moments throughout the years.

1. Caitlyn Jenner, 2015

The top spot, of course, goes to Caitlyn.

2. Demi Moore, 1991

It's the cover that spawned a million copycats — everyone from Christina Aguilera to Jessica Simpson has given the pose a try, but Demi did it first.

3. Michael Jackson, 1989

Speaking of oft-attempted poses... this was voted Vanity Fair's best cover back in 2013, and it definitely deserves it.

4. Kerry Washington, 2013

In 2013, Kerry was the first African American woman to pose on the cover of Vanity Fair for almost ten years (yikes) — and she totally slayed it.

5. Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler, 2008

Still one of my favorite magazine covers of all time (OF ALL TIME).

6. The Cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2015

A mix of fresh faces and iconic stars made this a cover to remember (and I'm still not over Gwendoline Christie's Storm Trooper armor).

7. Demi Moore, 1992

How's two years in a row of posing nude on the cover of Vanity Fair sound to you?

8. Princess Di, 1998

Come on, it's Princess Di.

9. The Cast of Game of Thrones, 2014

Still not over that one time all my favorite Thrones stars got glammed up for Annie Leibovitz.

10.This Early-Aughts Dream Team, 2003

This cover is nothing short of iconic, and the accompanying profile (where they're asked to list how many Juicy Couture outfits they own) might be even better.
