Taylor Swift Sings Rachel Platten's "Fight Song"

by Alex Kritselis

I'm so excited: This past Saturday, Rachel Platten sang her breakthrough hit, "Fight Song," with Taylor Swift backstage at the 1989 tour show in Pittsburgh, and I think the adorable moment could be just what the rousing empowerment anthem needs to finally blow up big. Now, to be clear, "Fight Song" was doing pretty well on its own before Swift came along. In fact, it had already reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Not too shabby! However, it fell to No. 36 last week. Ouch.

Something was missing. The catchy, feel-good tune needed more exposure. It needed a promotional event with the power to take it from moderate hit to mega hit. Enter: Swift's backstage sing-along. What perfect timing!

The "Bad Blood" singer’s Instagram video of the jam session has been "liked" over one million times over the course of three days. As I write this, "Fight Song" sits at No. 3 on iTunes (which might be a new peak, but I'm not 100-percent certain). Wowsers. Something tells me that's not a coincidence.

Watch Platten, Swift, an unidentified woman who apparently wasn’t worthy of an Instagram tag (I kid, I kid), and country newcomer Kelsea Ballerini belt out "Fight Song" below.

Did "Fight Song" need Swift's help? No. However, her 15-second clip will likely introduce thousands of people to Platten's work who may not have discovered it on their own... and that's really cool.

Platten, a super-talented 33-year-old singer-songwriter from Massachusetts, has been fighting for her "big break" in the music industry for years now. I'm so glad she's finally getting the recognition she deserves. Her four-track Fight Song EP (which is wonderful, by the way) is available on iTunes and Spotify now.
