These Toilet Paper Wedding Dresses Are Phenomenal

by Jessica Willingham

Who knew toilet paper had such a chic vibe? The Eleventh Annual Cheap Chic Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest announced their winners today, and the talent was amazing. Competitors tore, twisted, folded, and ruffled toilet paper into magnificent creations that will make you do a double take.

Eight women and two men were flown into New York City for the contest, which was sponsored by Charmin (of course). The dressmaking contest was judged by wedding planner to the stars and star of FYI Network’s Mikie Saves the Date Mikie Russo. The contest took place at Kleinfeld Bridal in Manhattan. VIP judge Mara Urshel, co-owner of Kleinfeld was also on hand as a VIP Judge.

The Grand Prize winner received $10,000 and their TP creation will be made into an actual dress to be sold by Kleinfeld Bridal. The second place winner received $5,000, while the third place received $2500.

Cheap Chic Weddings is a website dedicated to thrifty brides, and based the toilet paper contest on a popular bridal shower game. They asked readers to create wedding gowns using toilet paper, tape and/or glue. Entrants were allowed to sew, and were judged on the originality, beauty, and ingenuity of their creation.

“The top dresses this year showed incredible attention to style and detail,” said Laura Gawne, a Cheap Chic creator.

Dresses are made cheaply, but hold an incredibly high-end style. According to Cheap Chic, there is some serious science to this type of TP dress making. First, you have to decide between ultra strong or ultra soft, one or two ply, and of course you need a mean glue gun and old school Elmer's glue. This is like craft time on crack, at Parson's, with Tim Gun looking over your shoulder. Needless to say, the competition was fierce.

Top dresses featured elaborate necklines, Cinderella-sized skirts, and innovative headpieces. The architecture was cool, crazy, and definitely high.
