Comic book fans have been waiting with baited breath for the casting news of the new Spider-Man and the time has finally come! After some very persistent rumors that another British actor, Asa Butterfield, was the most promising prospect, Tom Holland has snagged the coveted role as Spider-Man for its newest iteration. These studios really are good at confusing the public, aren't they? I was so convinced that Asa Butterfield was going to be chosen, but I have no doubt that picking Holland was the best decision. So, now that he is the second English actor to play our beloved Spider-Man (I hold a candle for Andrew Garfield), there will be many people asking: Who is Tom Holland, anyway?
One thing is for sure, he has impressed many people over at Sony Studios and Marvel. Sony put out the casting announcement in a press release that also noted the film will be released "in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017." Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said of Holland,"For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start."
That said, the new Peter Parker is expected to make his first screen debut in Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War, which is due out in 2016. But for now, let's get to know Tom Holland a little bit more.
He Probably Made You Cry In The Impossible
The now 19-year-old played the part of Lucas, the eldest son of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor in The Impossible. The film followed the story of a family torn apart and reunited after the 2004 tsunami. The impressive part was Holland's first feature film and he auditioned for the role when he was only 13 years old.
He Got His Start in Theater
The actor first began dancing when he was very young which led to him auditioning for the role of Billy Elliot at the age of 12. He was cast in 2008 and had a very successful run on the West End until 2010.
He's An Avid Outdoorsman
Holland shares loads of photos on social media from the set of his latest film, Pilgrimage, which was filmed in Belgium and Ireland. He also shares snaps of himself doing many outdoor activities like snowboarding, surfing, golf, and running. He definitely likes to stay active!
He Is Already As Agile As Spider-Man
He is probably so agile because of his background in dancing, and according to his Instagram, he's already quite the acrobat. He often posts videos of himself doing some really rad back flips and aerial tricks, which will make his role as Spidey that much more natural.
He Has An Adorable Dog Daughter
He has the cutest Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Tessa, and he is the kind of guy who posts a lot of pictures of his pet, but she's so cute that you forgive him.
Now we just have to wait for the first pics of Holland in character!
