by Kristin Collins Jackson

With all the time I spend detangling and deep conditioning my hair, it's only a matter of time before those heavy, pore clogging oils start dripping down my back. Obviously, I have a DIY remedy for back acne to make sure that I'm not caught in a backless top this summer with a bunch of dark spots and blemishes...because, well, who wants that? Exactly. If you have ANY type of hair, protective measures are almost non-existent when it comes to back acne. Not everyone is secretly suffering from the shame of back acne this summer, but many of us who are had no idea the silent struggles our back skin was going through all winter.

As soon as skimpy clothes became temperature-appropriate, I quickly became cornered by my friends and coworkers to solve their bacne and FAST. Those over-the-counter body washes promising to zap those blemishes just weren't cutting it and since summer doesn't last forever, a speedy and all-natural back acne remedy is most definitely in order. Fortunately, being that I'm obsessed with every inch of my skin, I am fully equipped with some natural remedies that will make you go backless for the rest of the season. As the saying goes: If you don't got back acne, flaunt it!

We all know that our precious hair can cause back outbreaks, but there are plenty of other culprits out there that have nothing to do with your hair upkeep - phew! According to sources at Natural Home Remedies, tight clothes and back packs can cause friction that leads to back pimples. Naturally, if you're sweating up a storm that's only going to contribute to the horror that is back acne. It's important to keep up with your normal skin routines especially in the hotter months; oil and dirt can and will build up, clogging your pores which will make your sebum glands start to work overtime. Cleansing and moisturizing daily is the one of the only preventative measure you can take to avoid a nightmare on your back.

Back acne isn't all that different from the acne that may plague your face: According to sources at Acne-Pimples, understanding your breakout triggers is one way to end the struggles of back acne. Of course, we all know that can be as difficult to understand as quantum physics. When you begin your back acne treatment, consider any and all natural ingredients that have irritated your face in the past — your back is still skin and will react similarly to how your face reacts to certain products. One example is, if for some reason honey makes your face break out, it probably is also going to make your back breakout.

That being said, there are some things that are a bit too strong for me to use as a daily face treatment that my back is a huge fan of. Try this DIY Bacne recipe to make your back as touchable as your face.

DIY Back Recipe

You'll need to following for your new evening back treatment:

  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice (optional: for brightening dark spots)
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of witch hazel
  • 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil (avocado, apricot, or sweet almond are great alternatives)
  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops of geranium essential oil

Mix your ingredients into a dark colored container that you can seal up after each use. I like to use my treatment in a spray bottle to get to those hard to reach spots. I chose these essential oils in particular because they are soothing, they mask the smell of the apple cider vinegar, and I've had success with geranium in particular to alleviate hormonal breakouts. Use your treatment at night before bed and then shower off in the morning. This treatment is booming with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-septic properties that should get your back up to snuff in no time!
