8 Crazy Ice Cream Flavors

by Kat Kuehl

You already know and love all of the traditional ice cream flavors like cookie dough, mint chocolate chip, cookies 'n cream, and Blue Moon. But, ice cream selections extend far beyond the classic selections that you're used to seeing. There's a whole other world of bizarre ice cream flavors that you still need to explore!

Ice cream is the perfect summertime treat, and it's obvious that it's completely delicious and refreshing all on its own. But, it also provides a great foundation for the addition of a bunch of different crazy flavors.

When it comes to ice cream, I typically play it safe and select something that I know I'll love. But, lately I've been making an attempt to expand my horizons and sample new things, and I think that you should do the same! Why not step outside of your chocolate and peanut butter comfort zone and try something that might terrify your tastebuds? With everything from carrots or cucumbers to beer or mushrooms, there's a huge assortment of strange mix-ins and flavors that can step up your ice cream game.

You never know — you may just discover something new to love! So, kiss the chocolate syrup goodbye and get ready for a bizarre ice cream taste sensation.

1. Honey Jalapeno Pickle

I'm totally in favor of a great combination of salty and sweet, but this is something I never would've thought of on my own. As one of the flavors at Sweet Action Ice Cream in Denver, this treat features chopped cucumbers coated in Colorado honey along with pieces of fresh jalapeno, all mixed into a sweet cream for a dessert that's both sweet and savory.

2. Spaghetti and Cheese

I love spaghetti and cheese. But, I've never really had a desire to combine them into one dessert — a la spaghetti and cheese ice cream. This Venezuelan dish has cheese flavored ice cream with pieces of spaghetti noodles mixed in. Don't knock it until you try it.

3. Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel

Cashews and caramel are some ingredients you're used to seeing in ice cream. However, you probably don't find goat cheese quite as frequently. Made at Black Dog Gelato in Chicago, this ice cream has tangy goat cheese, salted cashews, and drizzles of sweet caramel. Apparently it tastes just like cheesecake!

4. Mushroom

When you first hear the words "mushroom" and "ice cream" together, your immediate reaction might be to turn your nose up and say "Ew." However, this flavor is made with candy cap mushrooms, which supposedly smell just like maple syrup.

5. Sichuan Pepper

This surprisingly refreshing ice cream contains just a few ingredients, including whole milk, sugar, double cream, large egg yolks, a pinch of salt, and — of course — Sichuan peppers.

6. Beer

I'm game to try beer-flavored anything. Ice cream company Frozen Pints makes a selection of beer ice cream flavors, including Brown Ale Chip and Honey IPA.

7. Cucumber

Combining vegetables with ice cream seems unnatural to begin with. But, this combination is actually quite crisp and refreshing. Many claim that it tastes similar to melon, much like a creamy sorbet.

8. Carrot Cardamom

This traditional Indian dessert may seem completely farfetched. Made with shredded carrots, sugar, and nuts, this ice cream has a very unique flavor. The cardamom adds an extra touch of sweetness to the recipe.
