13 Reasons You Love Bill Nye As A Kid & Today

by Rachel Semigran

If you grew up in the '90s, then you probably have some fond memories of watching Bill Nye the Science Guy while your biology sub tried to keep a bunch of hormonally-charged tweens from destorying the classroom. From 1993 to 1998, Bill Nye, the Washington D.C. whiz, entertained thousands of young people with his fun and educational series that made science accessible for everyone. Now a team of filmmakers are using Kickstarter to help make a documentary about the pioneering scientist's mission to make climate control and space exploration top priorities for national research and development. Self-proclaimed Bill Nye mega-fans David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg have brought on Academy Award-winning producer Seth Gordon to help make their dream film a reality.

According to the Kickstarter page, "We created a plan for a documentary that will offer an all access backstage pass to Bill’s epic quest to change the world. Then, we shared our vision with Bill, who not only said yes but opened up his life to us." Though most of us know Bill Nye best from his Science Guy days, he's made waves in recent years appearing on national news and talk shows to bring hard science to political debates.

The filmmakers spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and shared their goals for the documentary, "There's a hero at the center who needs to vanquish anti-science foes and literally change the world. But the man behind the bow tie is also a human being, with weaknesses and a private life. Hopefully our story will show the complete science guy in an inspiring and entertaining way."

I know I was inspired by Nye as a kid, and continue to be energized by his ongoing passion to bring science to the forefront of important conversations. Here are all the reasons why Bill Nye is your science hero then and now:
