Rumer Willis Is The Next Celeb To Play Roxie Hart
Lots of up-and-coming actresses aspire to be on Broadway, and for one starlet that dream has officially come true. According to reports, Rumer Willis will make her Broadway debut in Chicago at New York City's Ambassador Theatre on Aug. 8, and she's playing the role of a lifetime. The former 90210 actress will play Roxie Hart in the production during this limited-engagement run of the iconic Broadway musical, and it's the perfect place for Willis to show off both her acting and singing chops. Willis isn't the first actress to cut her teeth on the stage, and is one in a long line of stars who took on the role of Roxie. Career-wise, this is a smart move, and I can't wait to see how fans react to Willis giving them all of her "Hart."
For those of you who weren't musical theater geeks in high school, Chicago is the story of an aspiring star named Roxie who gets sent to prison when she shoots her lover in a fit of rage. It's only once she's in prison that Roxie's star really begins to shine: she finally becomes the public fascination she's always wanted to be, and it seems to overtake the fact that she's currently in jail on murder charges. It's an excellent role for any actress, filled with lots of dance numbers, fun songs, and plenty of over-the-top scenes.
Willis should kill it (no pun intended), and she's hardly the first one to do so. Here are some other actresses who recently graced the stage as Roxie in Chicago:
Brooke Shields
The model/actress danced her way across the Broadway stage as Roxie at the Ambassador Theatre in 2005.
Ashlee Simpson
In 2006 the "Piece Of Me" singer took her talents to London's West End to star as Roxie at the Cambridge Theatre in London.
Michelle Williams
Simpson wasn't the only pop star to grace the Cambridge stage. The former Destiny's Child member also took on the role in 2011.
Christie Brinkley
The former supermodel played the notorious chorus girl in a touring production of Chicago in 2012.
Jennifer Nettles
Like Willis will, Sugarland singer took on the role of the murderess in 2014 at the Ambassador Theatre.
Brandy Norwood
We already knew Brandy could sing and do the musical theater thing (her Cinderella is still a must-watch every time it comes on ABC Family) but she totally slayed as Roxie on Broadway in 2015.
