Gogo Graham Is The Future Of Trans Fashion

by Marc Cuenco

The transgender community is more visible than ever in the media, but the fashion industry has yet to cater towards millions of trans women and men's needs. That could soon change with Gogo Graham and her latest collection created specifically for transgender women. The New York-based designer, along with photographer Serena Jara, came up with the concept for the Resort 2016 lookbook, which gave full creative control to a diverse group of trans women. Not only did they model the clothes, but also styled and photographed themselves for the shoot.

"The whole idea started out with Serena and I talking about how there needs to be representation of trans women created by trans women because that doesn't happen very often, especially in the fashion industry," Graham said. "We don't have options in fashion. We have to just look for stuff, and that stuff isn't made for us. This time more than any other time I've been focused on seeing if I can make a collection that the models who are wearing it actually feel themselves in."

With all eyes and ears on Caitlyn Jenner in Versace at the ESPYs earlier this week and trans model Andreja Pejic's historic Vogue editorial, the trans community is eagerly waiting for someone to design clothes not just inspired by them, but one who knows firsthand what they seek out in their clothing, whether it's the cut, the functionality, or the aesthetic aspect. Graham's impressive fashion resume (she used to help design some of RuPaul's outfits on Drag Race) coupled with her personal experience allows her to design something authentic and comfortable for her clients.

"This time more than any other time I've been focused on seeing if I can make a collection that the models who are wearing it actually feel themselves in," Graham said. "I realized that I know how to hide things and accentuate things because I do that for myself, so I could easily do that for other girls too."
