Demi's New Video Is Straight Out Of The '00s

by Sabienna Bowman

Get ready to party like its 2004, guys. Demi Lovato's "Cool For the Summer" music video is here and it is retro-tastic. Like it's the beautiful neon-colored love child of a Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears video, "Cool For the Summer" is heavily influenced by the pop songstresses who came before Lovato. Between the foam party and Lovato and her squad chilling in a convertible with the top down as they cruise through the city, it is hard not to see parallels with videos from the not-too distant past. Of course, that doesn't mean "Cool For the Summer" isn't awesome, though.

The summer song is everything I could ask for. It's soft, seductive, and perfect for a night of crazy adventures, and Lovato moves between summer nostalgia and sexy cool with the practiced ease of a star. Visually, there's not a lot going on in the video, but it is the sparseness that gives it a classic pop feel. This is no "Bad Blood," and that's fine — sometimes all you need for a fun video is a car, good lighting, and a bucket full of glitter. The coolness is in the simplicity, just like it was in Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" back in the day.

Need proof? Check out the most retro moments from "Cool For the Summer" (along with the video) below.

Lovato Chills With Her Friends

Here's Lovato chilling with her friends in a crowded red convertible, as one does. Call me crazy, but it reminds me of the time a car full of hot guys rolled up to Aguilera's beach house to woo her and her friends in the "Genie in a Bottle" video.

Lovato Contemplates Summer Sexy Times

While lying seductively on a bed, Lovato daydreams about her potential paramour, and how they should really take advantage of the summer while they can. Again, I have to throw it back to Aguilera. She didn't have a bed and she was more conflicted about her come hither feelings, but the look is pretty close.

Party-Sized Bed Sharing

It's not a party until everyone piles onto one enormous bed, is it? OK, so these are obviously not the parties I've been to, but they have clearly been around since the '00s. Here's Aguilera having a much more chill, but no less strange bedroom party, in her music video for "Come On Over."

Leather + Slow Walking = Sexiness

Sexy sauntering down a corridor is the new sexy sauntering out of an elevator. That was a move Jessica Simpson — yes, Jessica Simpson — patented a long time ago.

Dancing In The Dirtiest Locale Possible

At least Lovato added foam to the dirty warehouse. I have no idea whether or not that makes it any cleaner, but it makes me feel better. Aguilera just embraced the grunginess all the way during her "Dirrty" dance party.

Consciously or unconsciously, I love the fact that Lovato served up a video full of nostalgia for the pop queens of the late '90s/early '00s. Those ladies produced summer hits that I still can't get enough of today, and Lovato's "Cool For the Summer" has the same iconic durability already. It's a simple video combined with the perfect summer song. Pop fans, prepare to fall in love.
