There’s never a bad time to have glowing skin, but if you prefer that glow to be a little golden, you’re probably already aware that it can come at a risk. Sitting out in the sun without proper protection in the form of sunscreen, clothing, and umbrellas can expose you to too much UV light, which not only increases your risk of developing skin cancer, but can also lead to uneven-looking skin (and yes, using a tanning bed poses the same risks). Instead, brands like Coco & Eve have prioritized finding safer ways to get golden skin using tan enhancers and self-tanning formulas that are also packed with good-for-skin ingredients. The brand’s latest two additions — the Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF 20 and Anti-Aging Tanning Serum — combine trademarked ingredients with long-standing skin care favorites that follow Coco & Eve’s environmentally friendly ethos.

Ahead, you’ll find all of the details on the new tan-boosting oil and tanning serum, as well as the products you’ll want to pair them with to stay glowing all year round.

Fast Facts:

  • Key benefits: enhances your tan while providing SPF protection and delivering moisture to the skin
  • Key ingredients: Melinoil™, sunflower seed oil, watermelon seed oil, cocoa seed extract
  • Fast-absorbing and non-sticky
  • Mango-scented
  • Cruelty-free
  • Vegan

The Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil with SPF 20 was developed to maximize your tan while still providing some broad-spectrum protection from the sun’s rays. Using Bali as its inspiration, Coco & Eve incorporated tropical ingredients from the island into the formula, including antioxidant-rich fruits like watermelon seed oil, guava fruit extract, pineapple fruit extract, and cocoa seed extract to keep skin moisturized and smooth. A mango fragrance adds to the tropical vibes, but the oil remains fast-absorbing and lightweight despite its numerous nourishing ingredients.

But it’s the combination of chemical sun filters and the biomimetic peptide Melinoil™ that really make the body oil a standout. You’re probably already familiar with chemical sunscreen filters, which work by absorbing UV rays before they can harm your skin, but the latter is a more recent discovery. The trademarked ingredient has been clinically shown to increase melanin synthesis by 39% to give you a deeper tan, but it helps to protect against signs of photoaging, too.

Pair It With:

Though the tanning oil does contain SPF 20, we recommend pairing it with a stronger sunscreen for even better protection, as the American Academy of Dermatology stresses the importance of using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when you’ll be going outdoors. While it’s important to note that a “safe” suntan doesn’t actually exist (because that tan color you’re left with is a sign of sun damage in itself), you can mitigate some of the damage with a stronger SPF strategy.

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, (Coco & Eve also says that the body oil should also be reapplied immediately after you find yourself swimming or sweating). And before slathering on the oil prior to heading outside, you can apply a layer of Coco & Eve’s Body Sunscreen SPF 50+ first. Designed to sink into the skin without leaving behind any greasy or chalky residue, the body sunscreen gives you a higher level of protection from UVA and UVB rays, and is water-resistant for up to four hours. Additionally, the chemical sunscreen is fragrance-free and includes several moisturizing and soothing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and vitamin E.

Fast Facts:

  • Key benefits: builds a fake tan over four to six hours while moisturizing the skin
  • Key ingredients: advanced DHA, niacinamide, polyglutamic acid, dragon fruit extract
  • Suitable for all skin types
  • Cruelty-free
  • Vegan

If you’d rather stick to a faux glow, Coco & Eve just added this Anti-Aging Tanning Serum to their lineup. Designed to be used on the face and neck, the gradual self-tanner uses an advanced form of DHA that develops a bronze color four to six hours after application, and also provides antioxidant protection. While the DHA gives you a golden glow over the course of several hours, ingredients like niacinamide, polyglutamic acid, and several skin-conditioning fruit extracts give skin an immediate radiance (and contribute to healthier skin over time, too). Niacinamide in particular provides multiple benefits by working to calm inflammation and redness as it protects the skin cells from oxidative stress, reduces unwanted hyperpigmentation, and improves elasticity. And speaking of skin elasticity, the polyglutamic acid included in the serum has been shown in studies to boost skin suppleness more effectively than ingredients like collagen and hyaluronic acid.

After you’ve completed your evening cleanse, you can apply three to five pumps of the tanning serum to your face, working the product down to your neck and décolleté before applying your usual moisturizer on top. (For lighter skin tones, the brand recommends that you mix the serum into your moisturizer for a more natural glow.) You can use the serum every other day until you achieve your ideal level of bronze, but be sure that you wash your hands after each use to prevent tanning stains on your fingers.

Pair It With:

And to ensure that the self-tanner on your face blends in with the rest of your body, consider the Antioxidant Face Tanning Micromist. The ultra-fine mist delivers golden color about six hours after application, but it’s also infused with moisturizing botanicals like coconut fruit extract, watermelon seed oil, passionfruit extract, and a hyaluronic acid-like plant extract called Hyalurosmooth™. Though the micromist was developed to be used on the face, it’s also a great way to touch-up those areas where fake tanner tends to fade the fastest, such as the tops of your hands.
