The Winter Beauty Routine Step That’s Worth Keeping Year-Round

As the layers go on and the rituals get longer, SPF remains one step worth keeping in place, even in winter.

Winter is when the beauty routine gets serious. The featherweight gel moisturiser gives way to something richer. A facial oil joins the rotation. Serums layer two and three deep, and the evening ritual stretches a little longer in front of the mirror. Cold weather can make skin care feel more deliberate, and the cabinet fills up accordingly.

One step tends to move in the opposite direction. As the days shorten and the sun feels distant, SPF slips down the order, treated as the thing you reach for in the warmer months and quietly retire once the cardigans come out. It becomes optional. Skippable. The first step to go when the morning is cold and the routine already feels long.

That instinct is worth examining, because it has the hierarchy exactly backwards. SPF is not the seasonal extra at the end of the routine. It is the step everything else is built to protect, which makes it less the final flourish than the foundation. The most considered winter routine is the one that treats it that way.

The Case For Treating SPF Like A Habit

The most useful way to think about sun protection is not as a product decision but as a habit, the kind you perform without deliberating. It is a view Ava Matthews has spent years making the case for. As Co-Founder of Ultra Violette, she has helped shape a newer generation of SPF products and position sun protection as a more central part of daily beauty routines. She puts the habit argument plainly.

“We always advocate for facial SPF application to become a habit, much like brushing your teeth. There is no point in only doing it at certain times of the year to get the best results for your skin,” says Matthews, Co-Founder of Ultra Violette. “Not only can it help prevent and slow skin ageing over time, it also helps skin look and feel better in the immediate.”

It is a deceptively radical idea for a beauty routine that tends to treat SPF as conditional, something reserved for bright skies and reached for only when the weather turns. Reframed as a habit, it stops being a weather-dependent choice and becomes the one fixed point in a routine that otherwise changes with the season. You do not skip cleansing because it is July. SPF, the argument goes, is the most important step in the routine, and it earns that place rain or shine.

This is also where Ultra Violette’s founding idea becomes relevant. The brand built its range around a simple idea: sun protection engineered to behave like skincare rather than the chalky afterthought most people grew up avoiding. Make the formula good enough to want to wear, and the habit takes care of itself.

The Hero Step: Supreme Screen

If the winter routine is going to revolve around one step, Supreme Screen is positioned as a strong fit. One of the brand’s best-known products is a hydrating facial SPF 50+ that does the work of three steps at once: moisturiser, primer and broad-spectrum protection in a single application.

The formula is built for skincare-rich routines. Saccharide isomerate, a plant-derived hydration agent, can provide long-lasting hydration, while squalane helps support the skin barrier against dryness associated with cold air and indoor heating. The finish is satin and the texture sits quietly under makeup, with no white cast and a soft, barely-there scent. It is designed to feel like a nourishing part of the routine rather than a purely protective final step.

Worn daily, it does something subtler than any single product claim: it makes the protective step the easy one. The reach-for-it-without-thinking step. Which is exactly where the habit argument and the product meet.

The Rest Of The Winter Wardrobe

A considered routine rarely runs on one product, and the rest of the range covers the scenarios a single SPF cannot. Think of these as the supporting wardrobe, each chosen for a specific layering moment.

“Generally our skin tends to need extra hydration so it can be helpful to find an SPF with added hydrating and skin nourishing ingredients like Supreme Screen. That being said, Winter typically sees us layering extra skincare products - more serums, hydrators (and sometimes heavier moisturisers too). If your skincare routine tends to need a bit extra during winter, you might want to go down the lighter route with your SPF. “SPF formulations with more hydrating, soothing and reparative benefits go down a treat in the cooler months. Look for an SPF that is formulated with added skincare benefits such as; antioxidants, amino acids, anti-inflammatories and hydrators to ensure the skin barrier is nice and healthy like Niacinamide, Vitamin E and C,” says Ava Matthews.

Queen Screen is a more elevated option, a luminising serum SPF 50+ for routines that want a little more from the protective step. Its silky, melt-in serum texture leaves a subtle radiance, which is an added benefit in the flat grey light of winter. It may suit routines that prioritize protection and glow.

Future Fluid is the mineral choice for skin that runs sensitive. Built on a lightweight Japanese zinc and fragrance-free, it delivers SPF 50+ with a soft, non-greasy finish and none of the heaviness that mineral formulas are known for. For reactive or easily irritated skin, especially through a season of cold wind and central heating, it is the gentler way to keep the habit intact.

Fave Fluid is the ultralight option for the heavily layered routine. For anyone already running rich serums and a heavier moisturiser underneath, it is the brand’s lightest SPF 50+ to date: fragrance-free, almost water-like in texture, and engineered to disappear over everything else without adding weight or a fourth visible layer. The one that layers undetectably when the rest of the routine is already doing a lot.

Sheen Screen handles the step most winter routines forget entirely. Editorial coverage of cold-weather skin tends to stop at the jaw, and the lips, which have no sun protection of their own and chap fastest in the cold, get left out. As Matthews puts it, “another thing in winter is to not forget the lips.” This SPF 50 lip balm protects and conditions in one, the detail-oriented finishing piece for a routine that takes itself seriously.
