Rupert Grint "Can't Enjoy" The 'Harry Potter' Movies For The Most Ron Weasley Reason Ever
Even though the Harry Potter movies are named after, well, Harry Potter, everyone knows that the series would be nothing without his redheaded sidekick, Ron Weasley. But, despite his central role in the series, the actor who played Ron, Rupert Grint, revealed that he isn't a fan of Harry Potter like the rest of the world. It's a shocking confession, given the staggering popularity of Harry Potter — both the books and the movies. At least it's not personal, though, because it turns out that Grint doesn't like to watch any movie in which he has had a role.
"I think being in things ruins them for me," the actor told the U.K.'s Radio Times. "I can't enjoy Harry Potter any more, not as a fan — it's just not the same." It sounds like something that his oftentimes insecure and doubtful character, Ron, would say, but it also makes sense. It must be hard to watch yourself in a movie that basically everyone in the world has seen without becoming anxious over it. Especially since, in the same interview, Grint explains that the fame that came with starring in Harry Potter wasn't always easy. "It was really exciting when I was about 11 or 12, but it got harder in my teenage years. Sometimes you just want to be invisible," he said.
However, even though he still can't watch Harry Potter, Grint now finds fame more satisfactory. "It’s definitely manageable. I end up having to take a selfie [for a fan] most days, but I’ve never really minded if it makes people happy," he told the magazine. "Though I hate it when people take pictures without asking."
Grint's costar, Daniel Radcliffe, has also commented on finding the Harry Potter movies hard to watch. The actor who played the title character takes issue with a specific movie in the series though, unlike Grint. In a 2014 interview with the Daily Mail, Radcliffe said, "It’s hard to watch a film like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince because I’m just not very good in it. I hate it. My acting is very one-note, and I can see I got complacent, and what I was trying to do just didn’t come across."
Emma Watson, who started playing Hermione Granger at just 9 years old, also struggles to watch certain parts of her Harry Potter scenes. Luckily, the ones that Watson takes issue with were left on the cutting room floor — at least until Jimmy Fallon brought them back to life last March when he showed Watson an outtake from the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
In the clip, a young Watson can be seen mouthing her co-stars' lines. While watching the video of herself doing this, Watson hid her face on the late night show. "This is actually quite traumatic with me because I created issues because of this, because I would ruin takes," the Beauty and the Beast star said. It's hard not to notice that doing so is an extremely Hermione-esque habit, which makes it all the more endearing.
Even though the three young stars from Harry Potter all seem to struggle a great deal with watching their own performances, at least a few of the movies meet some of their standards. In his interview with the Daily Mail, Radcliffe said that he approves of his performance in 2007's Order of the Phoenix, because, he "can see a progression." It sounds like the actor tends to be extremely hard on himself, just like his character in the Harry Potter movies was. It's almost creepy hearing how similar the actors behind their characters are, but, at the same time, it makes the fantasy world of Hogwarts seem all the more real.
Grint, Radcliffe, and Watson were a part of a series that had a remarkable impact on the world, and it's heartwarming to know that they all acknowledge that — even if they can't watch that series themselves.
