Though a piece of our hearts will always belong in the “Ahh! Adulting!” era, these days, us millennials are the ones traveling with young kids. That shift has redirected vacations from the overstimulation of our hustle-culture years toward something more intentional, prioritizing presence and connection with loved ones. And the data backs it up.

Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report surveyed 14,000 travelers across 14 countries, and this year’s data sends a clear message: vacationers want their time off to feel meaningful. Travelers are increasingly gravitating towards trips that reflect their values and create a sense of comfort. Spending time with family while creating new traditions is key. Bringing the comforts of home along for the ride — from pets to favorite plushies — is another major priority.

The bottom line? Travelers — many of them millennial parents — are redefining the family vacation, whether they’re leaning into local culture over grand experiences, taking to the interstates over the friendly skies, or blending new adventures with the comforts of home. Scroll on to learn some of the key takeaways from Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report and (maybe) get inspired for your next vacation.

Multigenerational Getaways Are Increasing In Popularity

Remember the 1980s family vacation movies with the two kids, parents, grandparents, and kooky great aunt all packed into the same minivan? That vibe is back. Almost half (48%) of global travelers reported a rise in families traveling with three or more generations. As millennials become the “sandwich” generation, we’re carrying forward our parents’ traditions while remixing them for our own broods.

In fact, 73% of global travelers say their preferences have been shaped by their parents, and most (66%) report the same for their hotel choices. So if you spent your summers road-tripping to the beach, there’s a solid chance that you’re seeking out the same sun and sand for your own family vacation — but with some additional input. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of adults traveling with children or grandchildren plan to actively involve the youngest family members in trip planning. And with more than half (58%) of adults setting aside screen-free time, those digital natives will get a healthy dose of IRL adventure.

Hotels that facilitate shared experiences make that easier, like Hilton’s LXR Hotels & Resorts. The brand’s Pursuit of Adventure program sets up thrilling once-in-a-lifetime excursions like hiking in Hawaii or hot air balloon rides over the Sonoran Desert.

For parents looking for a much-needed break, skip-gen trips are on the rise: 29% of respondents are opting for vacations that send the kids off with just grandparents. This affords vital bonding time between old and young while giving primary caregivers the “me time” they’re craving.

Road Trips Are Roaring Back

The all-American road trip is coming back, and the mix-CD generation is here for it. Seventy-one percent of American travelers plan to take to the road for their next getaway. More than three-quarters (76%) of global car travelers say spontaneity is their main motivation, making the open road the perfect playground for impromptu detours and family bonding.

Of course, every great road trip comes with a few pit stops. Sixty-one percent of travelers say they won’t drive more than five hours without stopping for a hotel stay – and when they do, comfort is key. The must-have amenities travelers look for when booking a stay include a comfortable bed (90%), free breakfast (83%) and access to a pool (63%), giving families a chance to burn off energy, recharge and refuel before hitting the road again.

These trends align with a desire for spontaneity in family vacations, with 78% of travelers saying that getting out of town with kids inspires them to try new things. And there’s no time to connect like on a road trip, with 84% of travelers wanting to seek out opportunities to play and connect on family vacations. (Might I suggest diving into some classic activities like the license plate game, spur-of-the-moment roadside attractions, or searching for the best hot dogs in one state? You’re welcome.)

Comfort Is The New Carry-On

Whether travelers drive, fly, or cruise to their destinations in 2026, they’ll be bringing the comforts of home with them, from favorite streaming shows to four-legged family members. It’s all about the convenience of having all your home comforts (pillows, tech, or even small appliances) with the excitement of exploring somewhere totally new.

For instance, 64% of vacationers search for pet-friendly accommodations when planning a trip, and Hilton reports that “pet-friendly” is the fifth most popular search filter on its site. And bringing the family pet along is just another way to make your 8-year-old happy.

Food is another major comfort zone (relatable), with the hotel restaurant or the in-room kitchen becoming the kitchen table away from home. “Grocery store tourism” is on the rise, with 77% of global travelers saying they enjoy visiting grocery stores to try local food and drink offerings when traveling.

Almost half of respondents (48%) report cooking their own meals while away, which of course is perfect for young, picky eaters. Hilton’s extended stay brands like Homewood Suites by Hilton and Home2 Suites by Hilton offer en-suite kitchens. Or, just order in! Brands like Hampton by Hilton, Spark by Hilton, and Tru by Hilton make it simple for guests, thanks to partnerships with familiar digital delivery services.

These reliable rhythms help people feel more relaxed, like they’re investing in a meaningful journey — whether they’re on a family adventure or a routine business trip. The end goal? Transforming time off into time well spent.
