26 Trump Tax Return Memes Taking Over Twitter
On Tuesday evening, a bombshell: Almost in unison, the White House and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow unveiled President Trump's 2005 tax returns. Maddow's source appears to have been journalist David Cay Johnston, who leaked pages from Trump's 2005 tax return documents to his website, DC Report. The White House responded minutes before Maddow's show aired by publishing the documents itself. Immediately, Twitter lit up with memes about Maddow broadcasting Trump's tax returns to the world.
In a statement apparently timed to coincide with the beginning of Maddow's show, the White House said:
[Trump] was one of the most successful businessmen in the world with a responsibility to his company, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required ... Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns ... The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans.
It was a naked attempt to make Maddow's story less newsworthy. Trump is, in fact, the first president to ever not make his tax returns public, although The New York Times published takeaways from his 1995 tax return during his presidential campaign.
During the campaign, Trump insisted that he was being audited and would release the documents in good time. After becoming president, he seemed to break with the notion that he would release his tax returns altogether.
Here's what Twitter had to say about Maddow's big reveal.
