Here’s The Deal With Anne Hathaway’s Suspish ‘Ocean’s 8’ Character

by Marenah Dobin

The trailer for Ocean's 8 has finally been released and it is nothing short of electric. Sandra Bullock is on board as Debbie Ocean, the woman who assembles a dream team to pull off the perfect heist. The trailer introduces viewers to all eight of the starring women, but one actor's role is a little confusing. What's the deal with Anne Hathaway's character in Ocean's 8?.

Bullock's character tells her crew, "In three and a half weeks, the Met will be hosting its annual ball and we are going to rob it. Not the ball itself, but the neck of Daphne Kluger." Daphne Kluger is Hathaway's character. In the trailer, it appears that Daphne is the victim of the robbery, but that does not seem to be the case. Just look at how Debbie phrased it. It is specified that "the neck of Daphne Kluger" is getting robbed, not Daphne Kluger herself.

Earlier in the trailer, Cate Blanchett's character declares, "Even if this was possible, you'd need 20 people." Bullock responds, "Seven." Obviously, Bullock plus seven adds up to eight — Ocean's eight. Bullock, Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter only adds up to seven people, so Hathaway must be part of the heist, even though she's seemingly the one being robbed.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bullock discussed the secrecy of the film and said, "I feel like we’re a Marvel film and we’re trying to at least let there be some surprises when the film comes out." Hathaway's character may be one of those surprises.

There are plenty of people who think Hathaway's character is the target of the heist and have expressed this confusion on Twitter in response to the trailer:

Even though Ocean's 8 is a very secretive project, there is still a lot to unpack here. This movie is a comprised of a primarily female cast, but Variety does report that Richard Armitage plays an ex of Debbie and that he's the target of the robbery.

The heist may be against Hathaway's character's necklace, but fans shouldn't assume that it is against the character herself. Just because she is rocking the necklace, that doesn't mean it is actually hers and it most likely isn't. For the most part, everything celebrities wear on the red carpet is borrowed, especially the extravagant jewelry. It would make a lot of sense to have a thief on the inside of the event and for the celebrity character to be that person.

This strategy was employed in Ocean's 11 with Bernie Mac's character Frank Catton, a casino dealer, who was part of the heist against a casino owner. It would make a lot of sense for another movie in this franchise to have another character "on the inside" of the scheme, and a MET Gala attendee as a member of the Ocean's 8 team would be the perfect fit this time around.

In the poster for the movie, there are eight women rocking all black outfits and sunglasses, including Hathaway. She definitely looks like she's a part of the crew in this photo. Why would a robbery victim be in this photo dressed like a part of the squad?

In another image from the film, Hathway's character is on the subway with the gang, wearing sunglasses and a green coat. This photo and the "disguise" of sunglasses make it seem like she is very much with the rest of them and trying to keep things low-key.

Of course, this movie hasn't been released yet and everyone involved has been mum on the details, so there probably won't be an official confirmation about Hathaway's character or any other major aspect of the film. Nevertheless, there is plenty of speculative evidence that supports the claim that Hathaway's character is in on the heist.
