Celebs React To Trump's Trans Military Ban & Don’t Hold Back
On Wednesday morning, Donald Trump went on Twitter to announce an apparent policy change in the United States Military. In a series of tweets, Trump stated that transgender individuals would not be allowed to serve in the armed forces in any capacity, due to "tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail". Celebrities took to social media to denounce the president's policy change, and defend the LGBTQ community.
Trump's ban of transgender people serving in the military reverses a progressive policy instated under the Obama administration in 2016 that allowed trans individuals to serve openly. Defense Secretary James Mattis announced last month that he would delay the policy’s enactment. Trump's tweets read in full:
After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow......
....Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming.....
....victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you
After Trump's tweets were posted, celebrities went online to defend the rights of transgender Americans, many of whom already serve in the United States Military. These stars didn’t hold back in their criticism, attacking the change in policy as well as the insensitivity of the president’s statements. The transgender community is routinely marginalized in the United States, and this act of solidarity is so important. From Andy Cohen to Zoe Kazan, stars are speaking out against the change in policy.
