Now You Can Finally See Rey & Kylo Ren Fight To Iconic Pop Songs
Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been out for over a month now, and superfans and haters alike have discussed, dissected, argued, and obviously, meme’d the new episode in spades. One fan took the liberty of remixing Kylo Ren and Rey’s epic battle scene in The Last Jedi in which the very unlikely allies team up to defeat the Praetorian Guards in the throne room, to the tune of John Williams’ (Oscar nominated!) score. But the fan videos pair the throne room lightsaber battle with a whole bunch of different songs, and surprise, surprise: they all fit like Luke Skywalker’s robot hand.
Twitter user and Star Wars megafan @rachlikesbands (part of her display name is “Saw TLJ 4x) paired the scene in which Rey and Kylo Ren team up to a number of amazing tracks in a very lengthy Twitter thread, which all somehow work with the fight scene. Some highlights: Rey and Kylo Ren fighting the Praetorian Guards to “Toxic” by Britney Spears; Rey and Kylo Ren fighting the Praetorian Guard to “Bet On It” from High School Musical 2; Rey and Kylo Ren fighting to “Footloose.”; to “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” (in a way, they are doing some dirty dancing). And, as a special treat, Rey and Kylo Ren battling with their lightsabers and the Force against the Praetorian Guards set the sweet, sweet sounds of the internet’s favorite song: “Africa” by Toto. Each rendition is a delight in its own way.
Of course, @rachlikesbands isn't the first to make a Last Jedi fan video, but their iteration is far better then one of the most recent that preceded it. According to the site Pedestrian, some sad sack Men's Rights Activist Star Wars fan cobbled together a 46-minute long edit of The Last Jedi with all the women cut out of it, called "The Last Jedi: De-Feminized Fanedit," which was uploaded as a torrent to The Pirate Bay. The anonymous user wrote as the description for the cut: "basically The Last Jedi minus Girlz Powah and other silly stuff." OK, sure! Luckily, news travels fast across the web, and Johnson caught wind of the edit and absolutely roasted its creator on Twitter.
That's gotta hurt! Even more so when John Boyega and Mark Hamill added their two cents, which was more hysterical "hahaha"s. Can you imagine getting slammed by Luke Skywalker?
So far it doesn't seem like Johnson, Hamill, or any of the other Last Jedi family has seen the awesome cuts of Rey and Kylo Ren's throne room battle to a soundtrack of absolute bops, bangers, and jams, but hopefully, Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) get a chance to see it, as the series of decidedly non-Star Wars tunes adds a whole new life to their choreographed and intense battle with the heavily armored Praetorian Guards. Seeing themselves use the Force to the tune of "Take A Chance On Me" by ABBA would surely brighten their day.
This, of course, isn't the first scene from a beloved film/TV series to be set to a number of different tracks. There was Armie Hammer's joyous, awkward dancing scene from Call Me By Your Name that got its own Twitter fan account, @armiedancingto, which went viral. The original scene's soundtrack is to "Love My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs, but the remixes included Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina" and Lorde's "Green Light." Armie not your speed? There's also David Harbour's dad-dancing from Stranger Things 2, which got its own @hopperdancingto. Sadly, both accounts are no longer on Twitter, but for now, @rachlikesband's glorious Star Wars: The Last Jedi battle scene remixes are still up, so use the Force and get your groove on while you can.
