According to the latest reports, a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale international airport on Friday afternoon has left five people dead and at least eight injured. The names of the victims are not known as of this writing. The shooting was reported around 1 p.m. ET, according to the Broward County Sheriff Department's Twitter account.
The shooting reportedly occurred in Terminal 2 of the airport, in the baggage claim area. One suspect is apparently in custody, according to the Sheriff's Department. John Schlicher, a passenger who said he witnessed the shooting as it began at the baggage claim carousel, told Fox News "People on either side of me were going down, so I dropped to the ground, my mother-in-law and my wife did. The firing just went on and on."
Florida Governor Rick Scott tweeted to confirm that he had arrived in Ft. Lauderdale and was "monitoring the shooting with law enforcement." Scott also indicated that he had discussed the matter with President-elect Donald Trump.
Below are some of the tweets that have been posted by users who claim to be at the scene of the alleged shooting, including Ari Fleischer, who served as White House press secretary under President George W. Bush.
