Danny Rand spends a lot of time talking about the monastery where he was raised after his parents died in a plane crash, a Shangri-la type of hidden city called K'un-Lun. It was there that he received training and super powers. What happened to K'un-Lun on Iron Fist? There are spoilers ahead for Iron Fist, so make like a lost city and get out of here
At the end of the season, Danny and Colleen attempt to return to K'un-Lun so that Danny can complete his training and apologize for abandoning his family. However, he arrives to find the green city gone. Only snowy ruins covered in blood and even a few bodies are left behind.
I expected the gate to be closed. There's no way that Danny and Colleen were going to escape New York that easily. However, the reality was much worse. K'un-Lun was likely destroyed by the Hand. Were there any survivors? Was the attack lead by Bakuto? It's unclear. Danny felt responsible, and he technically is. If protecting the entry to the city was his job, and the reason why he was granted the power of the Iron Fist — then of course he shouldn't have left! They probably also found the city, or discovered that the door was open, because of him too.
Danny's not the only one who abandoned the city in its time of need. In a scene straight out of The Dark Knight Rises, Davos met Joy Meachum in a European cafe. They plotted to take Danny down, while Madame Gao watched from another table. That's the kind of anti-hero pairing (and maybe even 'ship) that I can get behind, but it means that Davos wasn't around to protect K'un-Lun either.
The show ultimately proves that "you can't go home again" for every character. Joy and Ward will never truly have their father back. Colleen's family violently rejects her.
Danny learns that lesson twice, first with New York and then with K'un-Lun. Now he's responsible for what happened to K'un-Lun, and if Iron Fist returns for a Season 2, he's going to have to deal with that.
