You Don't Want To Miss The Strawberry Moon

by Kaitlyn Wylde

You've heard of the super moon, of the super duper moon, of the harvest moon, of the corn moon, who knows, probably even heard of the broccoli moon. But now you're about to hear about a moon that's much, much sweeter — the strawberry moon. What is the strawberry moon of 2017, you ask? Well, firstly, I should make clear that the strawberry moon doesn't have much to do with strawberries anymore. You can't eat the strawberry moon, it doesn't smell good, and it doesn't make strawberries spontaneously grow out of cracks in the street. It's not even bright red, as you might imagine it is upon hearing the name.

But before you get too deflated, know that the strawberry moon has a pretty good reason for being called so. According to the Farmer's Almanac, the strawberry moon was named by the Algonquin tribes. They knew that during June's full moon, it was time to start gathering fruit that's become ripe — particularly strawberries in certain areas. Though in Europe, it was referred to as the rose moon as strawberries are not native there. And while the moon is not bright red and does not have a green leafy hat, it does sometimes appear a slight shade of pink.

Obviously we don't have to worry about picking strawberries during this full moon, but, we should make a point out of remembering to set some time aside to look up, because June's full moon is going to be pretty pretty. The tickled pink, giant moon will definitely be worth attempting to capture for Instagram, at the very lease. Come on, I know you were wondering about that. Some amazing shots from previous year's spectacles have made quite a splash on the internet, so your competition is fierce.

Some of the pictures of the strawberry moon are so epic and so beautiful, it's hard to believe they're real.

Alas, we'll all have to see for ourselves. The next strawberry moon will occur on June 9, 2017. While there might be other times during the day and at night that you'll be able to catch a glimpse of this pink giant, the early morning will be your greatest opportunity. So don't forget to set your alarm!

So here's to hoping for clear skies and lots of visibility. While the pink moon isn't necessarily tied to any romantic offerings, you might consider letting it inspire you to do some work on your heart. Make sure that all the people in your life know how much you love them and that you're treating your own heart with compassion and respect. It's always a good time to check in with yourself and pamper your heart. And if the full, pink moon gives you the vibes you need to check in, go with it!
