What's Open On New Year’s Day 2017?

by Kiersten Hickman

Since New Year’s Day is counted as one of the 11 federal holidays during the year in the U.S., that means most businesses close up shop and take the day off. So, you might be wondering — what's open on New Year’s Day 2017?

You can probably guess that most of your favorite chains are open on the day that you need greasy food most — because what better way is there to cure that New Year's Eve hangover then with a huge stack of pancakes at IHOP, or buying a gigantic coffee with that Starbucks gift card you received this holiday?

First, it’s important to evaluate your surroundings If you live in a urban area, then chances are more than a few businesses will be open on New Year’ sDay. However, it’s common for more businesses in rural areas to have stores close up on the holiday. Even though the stores, restaurants, and coffee shops listed below are common chains, most actually have control over their store hours during the week — so although some locations of chains will be open New Year’s Day, there may be a few locations that decide to take the day off (or have way shorter hours than normal). So, make sure to double check the hours of any establishment before heading out on New Year's Day.

Restaurants/Coffee Shops That Will Be Open

Since most Starbucks locations vary in the hours based on location, the hours of operation will vary. This is one of those chains that base their hours on their location, so make sure to double check!

Dunkin Donuts will also be open.

As for restaurants, you can always count on the 24-hour gem called Denny’s to be open, especially if you’re looking for a late night fix after that New Year’s Eve party.

Or, if you’re an IHOP person, that’s open as well. Hours also vary on location.

You can also always count on McDonald’s and Burger King for a quick late night fix.

For you West-Coasters, In-N-Out will be open.

For everyone else, Five Guys is there for you.

Subway’s holiday hours vary based on location, but expect all of them to be open.

You can also count on Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s, Ruby Tuesday’s, and Olive Garden to be open during normal hours. Praise hands for soup, salad, and breadsticks on a lazy New Year’s Day.

Last, and of course not least, pizza can happen on New Year’s Day thanks to Domino’s, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, and Blaze Fast Fire’d Pizza.

Restaurants That Will Be Closed

Chipotle is closed on New Year’s Day. Sad face.

Sorry Midwesterners (or major city fried chicken lovers),but New Year’s Day is on a Sunday. So Chick-Fil-A will also be closed. Double sad face.

Stores That Will Be Open

Of course, all the usual stores that you know and love will be open, such as Target, Walmart, Macy’s, Best Buy, Rite Aid, K-Mart, and JCPenny. Others, however, have some changes to their hours.

Meijer will keep the same hours, but pharmacies hours are a bit later on New Year’s day, opening at 10 a.m.

Whole Foods will open later on New Year’s Day, starting at 9 a.m. instead of 7 a.m.

Stop & Shop will be open until 9 p.m. both New Year’s Eve and Day. However, the pharmacy will close at 3 p.m.

Walgreen’s is open, along with CVS Pharmacy! Hours may be limited, so make sure to double check before heading out.

Stores That Will Not Be Open

Trader Joe’s will close at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and will stay closed on New Year’s Day.

Costco will open up a bit later on New Year’s Eve (9 a.m.) but will close at the usual time at 6 p.m. It will also stay closed on New Year’s Day.

Most Wegman’s locations are closed on New Year’s Day, but there are a few that stay open, so you’ll want to look up if that applies to your hometown store!
