The second half Shadowhunters Season 2 ends on Aug. 14, and is sure to leave fans wanting so much more of the supernatural drama. Luckily Freeform announced ahead of that finale that Shadowhunters has been renewed for Season 3 and will debut in 2018. While a specific premiere date has not yet been announced by the network, there is already so much to look forward to in the future.

The Shadowhunters panel revealed that Alisha Wainwright, who plays Maia, has been upped to series regular for Season 3. Hopefully Sarah Hyland will return to her role as the Seelie Queen too. As for other plot details, Jonathan's return in particular, a lot of that depends on what happens in the Season 2 finale. There are sure to be some cliffhangers that will keep everyone guessing until the show returns next year.

It's a good thing that there is still so much book material to cover, both in Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series and in her various and many spin-off tales. The Freeform series could and should go on for ages.

If you really want to keep close tabs on Season 3, follow Shadowhunters executive producer and director Matt Hastings on Twitter. His updates provide plenty of teases about what's coming on the show.

Though the actual name of the episode is obscured, it appears that at least the title page for Season 3, Episode 1 of Shadowhunters is complete. Any progress is good progress.

Filming should actually begin soon, if Katharine McNamara dyeing her hair back to her Clary orange roots is any indication. Everyone, cast and crew alike, is getting ready for another year of adventure.

Things definitely aren't looking up for Jace, unfortunately. In an interview with TVLine, actor Dominic Sherwood said, “The writers keep telling me that it gets worse for Jace before it gets better and I’m like, ‘When does it get better?’ We finished shooting Season 2, and it didn’t get better. We’ve spoken briefly about what’s coming in Season 3, and it doesn’t get better." That tunnel won't lighten up or end for quite some time.

Both Seasons 1 and 2 premiered in January of 2016 and 2017, respectively. It's highly possible, especially as pre-production is already underway, that Season 3 will debut pretty early in 2018 and the wait won't be that long after all. Until Freeform makes an official announcement, however, the Shadowhunters fandom will just have to devour the Season 2 finale and speculate about how everything will turn out.
