Sam's Club Just Shut Down More Than 60 Stores — Here Are The Affected Locations

In what's likely one of the worst ways to find out you lost your job, many Sam's Club employees reportedly showed up to work at a store in Huston, Texas on Jan. 11 to find a note on the doors stating that the location was closed — indefinitely. According to Business Insider, though employees discovered their store was closing prior to any official announcement from Sam's Club or its parent company, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club CEO John Furner eventually confirmed that a large number of Sam's Club stores are shutting down across the country in an email to employees. Officially 63 stores are closing, though, according to Furner's email, some of the stores may turn into eCommerce fulfillment centers for SamsClub.com. Additionally, some stores might reopen briefly to sell of their remaining stock at a discounted rate, but they will eventually will close permanently.

If you're a club member, or if you spent much of your youth accompanying your parents to the store where they stocked up on bulk household items while you sought out free samples to keep yourself busy, you know that it seems to be a popular and lucrative company. So what happened?

According to some employees and customers on Twitter, many were asking themselves this very question on Jan. 11 when they reportedly arrived at work to locked doors and a sign that merely stated, "Sam's Club is closed today. We regret any inconvenience." In the email sent to employees that followed, confirming the closure of those 63 Sam's Club locations, employees were told they would be compensated for the next 60 days of work.

Sam's Club took to Twitter to reply to specific customer tweets about numerous stores closing, saying:

"After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition."

As for how this will affect club members, according to Business Insider, the company promises that the pharmacies will stay open for at least another two weeks while they work with the Board of Pharmacy in each state to help guide customers to other pharmacies they can visit in the future. They told pharmacy customers that they should expect to be contacted by the store directly to help them move their prescriptions.

Additionally, for any direct questions about Sam's Club closures, the company tweeted that customers should privately message them on Twitter for instructions on how to pick up purchased orders, find a new club, or end their membership (though, according to a Wal-Mart official, customers affected by the store closures will be refunded their $45 annual membership fees). You can also call 1-888- 746-7726 and an employee at the membership desk will walk you through whatever questions you may have about store closures, or membership details.
