At the MTV TV & Movie Awards, the Fight The System Award was presented by Tracie Ellis Ross and Congresswoman Maxine Waters on Sunday night and the Democrat from California received a stating ovation. So who is Congresswoman Maxine Waters? The 78-year-old woman is a longtime U.S. representative for the 43rd district of California, which comprises of parts of Southern Los Angeles and outside the city, including Los Angeles International Airport, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Torrance, Gardena, and Lomita, according to her official website. But if you live outside of the Golden State, you probably know Waters for her support of the resistance against President Donald Trump and her viral tweets calling for him to be impeached.

During her appearance with Ross at the MTV awards show, Waters praised the movies and TV shows in the Fight The System category, calling them “honest, well-told stories lead to important discussions, lead to understanding, and can lead to a changed nation.” Among the films nominated in the category were uke Cage, Get Out, Loving, Mr. Robot, and the winner, Hidden Figures.

Waters is currently elected to her 13th term as a congresswoman, taking office in 1991, and has dedicated 37 years of her life to working in the public service. But the rest of the country most likely knows Waters for being outspoken against Trump on Twitter, and calling for his impeachment via the social media platform. Waters told The Hill in March that she believed that most of her social media followers were millennials for that reason. “They like it when I really confront Trump and talk about impeachment," she told the publication.
