On June 15, 2020, a new black and white billboard was uncovered in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. It’s unveiling was significant — not only because it happened on Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States – but because the advertisement’s model was one of the few Black transgender women to ever cover this iconic stretch of NYC billboard, or fashion billboards at all for that matter.

An immediate sensation, thousands of people took to social media to show their support for the model and to recognize the significance of the event. For model Jari Jones, the experience felt like a torch finally being lit.
