Every summer, shorts get their time to shine. And with their return, comes the perennial search for ways to put our own unique spin on the classic style. As part of the Urban Outfitters Short Stories campaign, four NYC-based artists (Eva Alt, Simone Smith, Imani Randolph, and Lauren Chan) invite us into their worlds to show us how they style the versatile summer staple. Ahead, these individuals share what fuels them creatively — in their wardrobes and beyond.

Originally from Buffalo, ballerina Eva Alt has called NYC home for seven years. As a dance teacher, she encourages students to explore ballet, as well as their own voices and style, in a non-intimidating space. “Dancing is a way to be loud in a different way,” she explains. “Being yourself is the only thing that will make you stand out in a sea of dancers — a teacher of mine would always say that. The only way to be different is to be yourself.”
