7 Women On The Difference The Right Bra Can Make

By Erin Kelly

Okay, ladies. It’s time we get real: While ‘athleisure’ fashion is super cute and on-trend right now, it isn’t always the best choice for that high intensity kickboxing class or that 10-mile run. As much as I love the bold colors, sleek designs, and strappy silhouettes of modern sports bras, I’ll be the first to admit that they don’t always hold up when it comes to making physical power moves

As a fitness writer, cycling instructor, and running coach, I spend a lot of time in the gym, literally bouncing from one workout to the next. That’s why it’s always been a goal of mine to find effective sports bras that also make me feel like a million bucks. Who says you can’t have it all?

In search of bras that’ll help you push your limits without sacrificing style, Bustle partnered with Athleta to talk to seven women about what their perfect sports bra looks like. Read on for quotes from active women about what works for them, plus recommendations of the gear that can help you take your workout to the next level.

Jenna, 30, 32A

“My favorite sports bras are versatile, uncomplicated, and almost always black. My workouts are typically pretty tame and low-impact when it comes to bounce-levels (barre classes in New York City or hiking when I’m back in Los Angeles), so I don’t need a ton of high tech details or support. I love a silhouette that works just as well with active leggings as it does with some cozy sweats while I’m home cooking dinner. Style matters to me because feeling cute in my exercise gear can be a great motivator to actually go to class after a long work day!”

Rachel, 30, 36DD

“As a well-endowed runner who is currently marathon training, the right sports bra is one of the most important pieces of gear for me. I always look for maximum support, especially when I'm training at long distances. Finding that kind of support without giving up comfort can be a challenge — I need high-quality material and construction that can hold up over multiple training cycles.”

Morgan, 33, 32A

“I live a very active lifestyle, so I use sports bras as my all-around daily bras. Athleta bras are comfortable, stylish, and supportive without being too overbearing to wear when I am not running. With a smaller bust, I need support but I hate the feeling of being too confined, like I can't breathe. My favorite bras are ones with interesting strap styles, earth tones, and lower cuts so I can pair them with casual tops.”

Katie, 33, 34B

“My ideal bra also doubles as a crop top: thick straps, soft and comfortable, holds everything in, and stretchy enough that it’s not a struggle to pull it over my head. I live in Florida and I pretty much only work out outside, so it gets very hot and sweaty. That’s why I only rock sports bras that I don’t need to wear a shirt over!"

Amanda, 28, 34D

“I coach a high impact, high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout class, so I need something with adjustable straps that is sized by actual bra size, not just ‘small,’ or ‘large,’ so I get a good, true fit. I also like something that clasps in the back so it’s not only adjustable, but easy to take off!”

Kara, 30, 32C

“I love a high impact bra that is soft and has a great pattern. I want something that’s versatile enough to wear to the gym, on a run, or at yoga class. Plus I love a high neckline that provides a nice shape without cleavage. And a cute design is a must — something that’s practical and chic, my favorite combination!”

Kirsty, 47, 34B

“As a generally active person, I need to make sure my sports bras are comfortable enough to wear all day without shoulder pinching or chafing. My must-have requirements include adjustable straps for my long torso, great sweat absorption, and a super comfortable feel that works well with everyday outfits."
