Goop's Debut Bag Line Was Inspired By Rap Icons

by Marc Cuenco

Whether she's covering Cee Lo Green's "Forget You" or singing rap classics as Broadway show tunes on The Tonight Show, Gwyneth Paltrow's love of hip-hop runs deep. So much so that Goop debuted hip-hop clutches in honor of rap legends The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z, and Eminem. Co-designed by Edie Parker, the special edition bags come in two "Flavia" style designs: the Hov/Shady clutch in black and the Pac/Biggie clutch in blue.

According to Goop: "We asked Edie Parker to design a duo of hip-hop themed clutches, just for us." The exterior of each clutch features a rapper's nickname on either side, with Eminem sharing a bag with Paltrow's close friend Jay-Z in the black acrylic model, while the late rappers Shakur and Biggie Smalls' names are displayed in a pearlescent blue model (also made of 100 percent acrylic). The clutches come with a hinge closure with kiss lock, and includes a mirror and Parker's logo in the interior.

The Edie Parker x Goop clutches debuted on the site Monday morning. Goop even gave a shout-out to hip-hop legend Smalls on its Instagram with the caption: "This is kind of a B.I.G. deal." The only catch? Each hip-hop themed clutch also comes at a big price tag — $1,695 each.

While I can appreciate Goop's (and in a sense, Paltrow's) attempt at marketing towards a younger demographic, there are better ways to rep your favorite hip-hop icon without spending thousands of dollars, IMHO.
