R.I.P. eBay Fashion App

by Marc Cuenco

As an eBay member for the last 14 years, I have used the site several times to buy fashionable goods, both new and pre-loved, as well as sell a few items from my own closet. Like thousands of others, I was a little shocked at first to hear that the eBay Fashion app has been shut down, along with other mobile applications including eBay Valet, eBay Motors, and the delivery service eBay Now. So, what gives?

“As an early leader in mobile commerce we have created significant business value and insights from these special-purpose apps,” the company said in a statement. “Over the years we have integrated many of the insights, learnings, and functionality into our core mobile experiences.”

It seems eBay has integrated these standalone apps into its primary app, which will offer an easier and more streamlined user experience. To be honest, I wasn't even aware of that specific eBay apps like Fashion and Motors even existed until recently. I'm not alone. According to Tech Crunch, the eBay Fashion app ranked No. 650 in the lifestyle category based on findings by analytics and market intelligence expert App Annie. So, retiring this app doesn't seem like a bad idea after all, especially if eBay promises to improve its core app for millions of fashion auction fanatics worldwide.

But don't worry, eBay will still be the go-to site for sold out designer collaborations and luxury goods, even if the prices sometimes get ridiculously marked up by individual sellers. Happy bidding!
