Things Are Getting Real On 'The Voice'

by Kristie Rohwedder

After Monday's great performances, I was dreading Tuesday night's episode of The Voice. So much so that I didn't even bother guessing who would go home. I put it from my mind entirely. About five minutes before the live eliminations episode, I said, "Carson Daly? Are you out there? It's me, Kristie. Please give me the strength to watch this results show." Even with the power of the Daly, the episode was not easy.

The ep used performances to distract me from the looming elimination. It almost worked. There was a cute Kelly Clarkson performance and a cute Blake Shelton/Xenia (from Season 1) duet. Tessanne Chin, Jacquie Lee, and Matthew Schuler sang "You've Got the Love" and I was into it. All three of them can BELT. I just liked watching the trio go for big notes over and over. James Wolpert, Will Champlin, and Cole Vosbury sang "More Than Words" with Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme. The dudes sounded fantastic. James sang like a bird. And the top six sang "O Holy Night." It was good… but the backup singers kind of overpowered the top six. Just being real.

I've stalled enough. Here's who America saved:

1. Jacquie Lee2. Cole Vosbury3. Tessanne Chin4. Will Champlin5. INSTANT SAVE

And so it was. The fates of James Wolpert and Matthew Schuler were in Twitter's hands. I paced during the commercial break. I took deep breaths. I talked at Carson some more. The commercial break ended. Carson had the results. My chest tightened. Carson announced that James Wolpert was saved by the Instant Save.

Oh, Matthew. You talented, magical human. I am so, so sad. Silver lining: James Wolpert is still on the show. James Wolpert is really, really great. Oof. It's only going to get harder from here on out.

Highlight of the Night

After Clarkson's performance, she and Carson chatted about her pregnancy. Clarkson observed that there were "a lot of pregnant people here." Don't ask me why, but it made me laugh.
