Carly Rae's "Warm Blood" Shows Off Her Edgier Side

by Chelsea Mize

Look alive, Jepsen fans. Carly Rae Jepsen released a new single, "Warm Blood," and, much to the shock of skeptics everywhere, it's actually pretty darn good. Jepsen has made an effort to push her limits and experiment with her sound on her new album, E•MO•TION, which is set to debut on August 21. Carly Rae Jepsen isn't always known for her lyrical prowess (I'm looking at you, "I really really really really really really like you") but Carly Rae Jepsen's "Warm Blood" lyrics show off an edgier side of Carly Rae and prove that she's taking some risks with her sound.

Jepsen collaborated with Rostam Batmanglij on "Warm Blood," so if you heard the track and were thinking, "Wow, this track sounds kind of weird for Carly Rae..." then obviously you've noticed Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend's touch. Batmanglij's influence has given Carly Rae's bubblegum pop aesthetic an intriguing twist and "Warm Blood" really demonstrates that Carly Rae Jepsen isn't here to play with this new album. She's bringing the heat.

Carly Rae Jepsen has dug herself quite the niche in the pop genre and, from what we've seen of her new album thus far, it seems like she's trying to demonstrate her versatility and cultivate a bit more of an edgy sound. Her latest single seems like a step in the right direction as the "Warm Blood" lyrics show a more complex Jepsen, as you can see in the 6 cutting-edge lyrics below. If you haven't heard "Warm Blood" yet, check out the wonderfully unique "Warm Blood" below and prepare yourself for a whole new slew of Carly Rae Jepsen, as the singer will be releasing a new single every Friday up until the release of E•MO•TION on August 21.

"I've got a cavern of secrets/None of them are for you/Even if you wanted to keep them/Where would you find the room?"

Though Carly Rae might come off as innocent, there's a whole untold world that lies inside of her. The protagonist of the song wants to be let in but Carly Rae is skeptical of his ability to handle her secrets.

"Let down my guard tonight/I just don't care anymore/I've told a hundred lies/But I don't wanna tell you any at all"

Carly Rae's muse puts her at ease. He makes her want to break down the walls she's put up and reveal her true self to him.

"Warm blood feels good, I can't control it anymore/Sweet one, you should stop me there but I keep on talking/I would throw in the towel for you, boy/Cause you lift me up and catch me when I'm falling for you"

Blood is raw and visceral, it's a primal part of our very being. Carly Rae's boy gets her blood pulsating, coursing through her veins, warming her with the heat they share between them.

"And I can not control it/The way you're making me feel/And you have got me going/Spinning in circles 'round your warm blood"

This connection surpasses logic and reason. Carly Rae can't stop it; she can only fall into it and accept her fate.

"I saw myself tonight/Saw my reflection in the mirror/My hands and heart were tied/But I was scared of almost nothing at all"

She is in so deep, past the point of return. She is helpless at the hands of her emotion, unable to stifle how she feels. She's vulnerable and open and that's okay. For the first time, she's not so scared to be exposed.

"Warm blood, underneath my skin/Warm blood, my heart is pumping"

Carly Rae can't control her feelings for him. She's as helpless to his charms as she is to stop the beating of her own heart. Their love is inevitable, unstoppable.
