These Songs Will Get You Ready For The Semester

by Orli Matlow

Don't you just hate that transition from August to September? There you are, having an awesome summer, making memories with your girl squad, and perchance having a summer fling, but you know that school is just around the corner. Then, suddenly, you blink, and August is over, leaving the first week of September to loom over you as you scramble to get your homework done in time for the first day of school after Labor Day. Listen, we've all been there. If you want to start the year off right, you're going to need some songs for the first day of classes.

Sure, you might not be allowed to have your headphones in during homeroom, or while your teacher is lecturing at you in the lecture hall, but what song you listen to on your way to class can set the tone for your entire day. Music just understands your feels, from the wistful nostalgia over the loss of your summertime fun to the confidence boost you need to ask out that guy you've had a crush on for the past two semesters. Now is a good time to start facing the reality that it's almost time for classes to start up again, and to listen to music that either helps you get your angst out, or will put you in a more hopeful place for this semester.

Here are seven of the best songs to get ready for the first day of classes, courtesy of everyone from Green Day to Katy Perry.

To Get Your Angst Out: "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day

An obvious choice, and this one can be cathartic. Plus, Evan Rachel Wood is awesome in the music video.

To Help Get Confident: "Roar" by Katy Perry

You are a champion! And whether it's your peers or your professors, people are gonna hear you roar this year.

To Make You Feel the Girl Power Within: "Independent Woman" by Destiny's Child

You've got this, and you've got your friends on your side.

To Prepare To See Your Ex on Campus: "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" by Taylor Swift

Remember why you broke up, and why your summer without them was so awesome in the first place.

To Help You Feel Hopeful: "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles

It's hard to feel bitter while listening to this song. It's bright and will make you smile, even if your late nights and later mornings are over.

To Make You Fearless: "Not Afraid" by Eminem

"We'll walk this road together, through the storm / Whatever weather, cold or warm / Just letting you know that you're not alone." Who would have thought the Real Slim Shady would be this loving?

To Make You Welcome the Challenge: "Stronger" by Kanye West

Bring on the ups and downs, and the hard times to come this school year. It will only make you stronger.

Start getting ready now for your best academic year yet! Or at least a better one since the last.
